[Commlist] Job: Assistant Professor of Communication and Africana Studies

Sun Oct 20 22:12:38 GMT 2019

*Assistant Professor of Communication and Africana Studies*

Tulane University’s School of Liberal Arts is making significant investments in its media and communication programs. The growth in interest in media as an engine for social change reflects our vibrant student body and our commitments to interdisciplinarity. We seek scholars and critical practitioners in media and communication whose work addresses  key strategic areas for Tulane.  We aim to prioritize work that engages actively with global/transnational conversations; and which can productively intersect with issues relevant to New Orleans and the greater Gulf South region. As such we are seeking a dynamic colleague to join the faculty with a joint appointment in the Department of Communication and our Program in Africana Studies.

Applicants should be productive critical scholars conversant with or experienced in digital media practices. We are open to consider different types of critical and scholarly output that successful candidates will pursue, and we are as interested in traditional forms of scholarship as we are in visual forms. While the position is located in the Department of Communication and in the Program in Africana Studies, there will also be opportunities for faculty to bridge to the Program in Digital Media Practice, itself a thriving area of student interest which the School is investing in.

The Department of Communication is an interdisciplinary department specializes in the critical study of media, technology and transnational communication. With more than 300 undergraduate majors, its full-time faculty offers a range of theoretical, historical, and practice-oriented courses. In addition to their particular areas of specialization, candidates should be prepared to offer introductory classes and upper-level core seminars in Africana Studies.  Tenure-line faculty members teach two courses per semester (2-2) across one or more or more disciplines, with substantial support for faculty research and professional development. The successful candidate will have half of their teaching and service assigned to each unit and full voting rights in both.

*Qualifications *

Qualified candidates for this position will hold a PhD degree in Communication or a related field by June 30, 2020.

*Application Instructions *

Candidates should submit a letter or application, a curriculum vitae, a list of three professional references with contact information, and one or two samples of your critical work (written and/or media). Other materials may be requested later. Questions can be directed to Dr. Ferruh Yilmaz ((fyilmaz /at/ tulane.edu) <mailto:(mporto /at/ tulane.edu)>), Chair of the Search Committee. We are committed to creating an intellectually diverse, inclusive, and equitable institution, and we especially encourage candidates from historically underrepresented groups to apply. Review of applications will begin November 18 and will continue until the position is filled.
