Assistant Professor, Interactive Digital Studies

The University of Northern Iowa’s College of Humanities, Arts & Sciences - Department of Communication Studies seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Interactive Digital Studies beginning in August 2019. The program area is Interactive Digital Studies (IDS). The areas of focus may include web and mobile applications, user interface design, hybrid forms, interactive design, data visualization, media design, creative coding, extended reality, or emergent media. There will also be opportunities to teach topics in digital culture. Some experience in digital advertising or digital marketing is a plus. This full-time (9 month) position requires teaching three courses each semester, and gives the successful candidate great flexibility to teach to their strengths and creative freedom to build one’s own work portfolio. Our intermediate and advanced courses are topic based; the successful candidate’s research and creative work will contribute to the direction of our program. Candidates should be prepared to teach coding and digital visualization skills in a lab environment, be able to demonstrate new developments in interactive media, advise students, and bring innovative ideas to curriculum development; options for teaching graduate students also exist.
IDS (ids.uni.edu <http://ids.uni.edu>) is UNI’s fastest-growing program
with a flexible, interdisciplinary curriculum based around four
foundation courses and a menu of eight digital “bundles” in the areas of
advertising, imaging, visualization, computation, music, writing,
learning, and history. Our award-winning faculty are supportive and
team-oriented, embracing new ideas and advocating hands-on projects and
student self-learning. Housed in UNI’s Department of Communication
Studies, with a strong emphasis in visual rhetoric, cultural studies,
and media studies, IDS encourages work that aims at social impact. Our
state of the art IDS classrooms are served by a responsive tech support
crew.
With over 11,000 students, UNI is located on a beautiful campus of more
than 900 acres, with both historic and modern buildings. Our walkable
and bikeable campus community is located in the College Hill
neighborhood, with restaurants, shops, cafes, music, and the
university’s world-class performing arts center. Cedar Falls is a
thriving college town with destination restaurants, some of the best
K-12 schools in the state, farmers markets, a local food community,
annual festivals, and an extensive recreation trail system. The metro
area of Cedar Falls, Waterloo, and surrounding communities has a
population of about 170,000, and is within 300 miles of Minneapolis-St.
Paul, Madison, Milwaukee, Chicago, Omaha, Kansas City, and St. Louis.
UNI has a bold vision that we will be a diverse and inclusive campus
community that provides an engaged education empowering students to lead
locally and globally. We seek faculty across disciplines, departments,
and colleges to work together to build our national prominence in any of
four distinct but interrelated areas of our vision and strategic plan:
engaged learning, diversity and inclusion, sustainability, and community
engagement. Successful candidates with background and interest in these
areas will form clusters to advance our work, joining current faculty
conducting teaching, scholarship, and service in these areas.
A terminal degree (MFA) in a studio discipline or related field (e.g.,
Digital Arts, Computational Arts, Interactive Multimedia, Game Design,
or Communication Studies) is required, or evidence of near completion. A
Ph.D. will also be considered if the candidate has an active creative
practice.
The required qualifications include substantial research/creative
potential in the area of interactive digital studies; be committed to
excellence in teaching; and demonstrate excellent written and oral
communication skills.
Preferred qualifications include creativity and innovation in the area
of interactive digital studies; prior teaching experience, and evidence
of excellence in teaching at the college level.
