Position Announcement:

The School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) at the University of 
Oregon (UO) is proud to announce a position for a tenured Professor 
(Associate Professor may be considered) as the inaugural holder of an 
endowed chair in Science Communication and the Director of the newly 
launched Media Center for Science and Technology (MCST) (see 
http://journalism.uoregon.edu/research-projects/mcst/). This hire will 
join a nationally recognized school that emphasizes critical thinking, 
media literacy, experiential learning, and a commitment to social 
progress and diversity.

Ideal candidates will be internationally recognized leaders in science 
communication (or a closely related field) who are prepared to lead and 
build the new MCST in collaboration with colleagues in the SOJC, across 
the University of Oregon and the Phil and Penny Knight Campus for 
Accelerating Scientific Impact, and beyond. Furthermore, ideal 
candidates will have deep experience in obtaining external grants from 
government and nonprofit sources (and demonstrate potential for 
fundraising with private donors with the support of the dean and our 
development team); will be experts in translating research for public 
impact and engagement; and will work with a variety of stakeholders 
(such as scientists, policymakers, media organizations, and technology 
platforms) to enhance public understanding of key issues associated with 
science, technology, and society. Because research shows that scientists 
and citizens often see the same issues through different lenses, there 
is a preference for scholars of media and communication who can bridge 
gaps between innovations in science and technology and the practical 
knowledge about and implementation and use of such discoveries.

In addition to graduate teaching, the candidate will be expected to 
teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in science communication and 
at least one other sequence in the SOJC (e.g., Advertising, Journalism, 
Media Studies, or Public Relations), and will be expected to work 
collaboratively with SOJC and UO faculty on research and teaching 
initiatives in areas such as environmental communication, media 
technologies, “green” brands, and health communication. Enhancing at 
least one of these areas, as well as focusing more broadly on science 
communication, is a goal of this position. The candidate may teach 
classes outside the SOJC as appropriate, given the interdisciplinary 
nature of science communication and collaborative relationships we 
expect this leader will build with other UO units.

Department or Program Summary:

The SOJC is an ACEJMC-accredited program with over a 100-year history at 
the University of Oregon, which is a comprehensive research university 
and a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU). Our 
program thrives as a journalism and communication school known for 
innovation, ethics, and action. We offer four undergraduate 
concentrations (in advertising, journalism, media studies, and public 
relations), five professional and academic master’s programs, and a 
doctoral program in media studies.

Minimum Requirements:

Ph.D; a record of scholarly achievement and a research agenda befitting 
an incoming endowed chair professor; experience recruiting and advising 
graduate students and mentoring junior faculty; and a record of 
effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Preferred Qualifications:

A successful candidate will support and enhance a diverse learning and 
working environment. Administrative experience, including leading 
departments, centers or programs similar to the MCST, is preferred, as 
is professional media experience. Experience in obtaining external 
grants from government and nonprofit sources (and demonstrate potential 
for fundraising with private donors with the support of the dean and our 
development team).
