Techne AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership Studentships at the University 
of Westminster

The University of Westminster is one of the nine universities that make 
up the AHRC-funded technē Doctoral Training Partnership.

Technē supports outstanding students pursuing the craft of research 
through innovative, inter-disciplinary and creative approaches across a 
range of the arts and humanities. For more information on technē andthe

As well as financial support, technē offers a developmental framework 
for doctoral researchers across the collaborating institutions, with 
research training, supportive community networks, professional and 
public engagement opportunities and a space for both independent and 
collaborative scholarship.

Technē is now welcoming applications for fully-funded studentships 
across the arts and humanities beginning in autumn 2019.

At Westminster we are offering technē studentships in the following areas:

- Centre for Research and Education in Arts and Media (CREAM): The 
Centre was judged by REF 2014 as the UK’s leading research centre 
working across art and design, with a rating of 95% of our research as 
world leading or internationally excellent.

- Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI): A world-leading 
centre of media and communication research that conducts research and 
research education focused on the role of media, culture and 
communication(s) in society and the critical study of media and power.

- English Literature, English Language and Visual Culture (part of 
School of Humanities)
The research publications of the School’s staff in English Language, 
Literature and Linguistics were ranked by REF 2014 as being in the top 
20 of departments in the UK and we also have internationally excellent 
research in Visual Culture.

Studentships include maintenance and fees for three years for a full 
time student, or six years for a part-time student.

Normally to be eligible for a full award a student must have no 
restrictions on how long they can stay in the UK and have been 
ordinarily resident in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of 
the studentship. EU students are eligible for a full award if they have 
been ordinarily resident in the UK throughout the three-year period 
preceding the start of the studentship (including for full time 
education). Residential eligibility is based on a physical presence in 
the UK. To be eligible for a fees-only award, a student must be 
ordinarily resident in a member state of the EU.

Studentships are open to students who have already started their 
doctoral study but they must have at least 50% of the funded period of 
an AHRC award (usually 18 months) remaining at the time they start their 
scholarship.

If you are interested in applying for a place at the University of 
Westminster supported by a technē studentship, we strongly recommendyou 
first contact a member of the academic staff in the relevant area and 
talk to them about your proposal.

You must apply for one of these programmes in order to be eligible for a 
technē studentship. If you apply for programmes in other areas your 
application will not be eligible.

Please make sure you indicate on your application form that you wish to 
be considered for a technē studentship.

Application deadline
The deadline for applications is 4 January 2019

Interviews will be held in the week commencing 4 February 2019.
If the university decides to nominate your application to technē, it 
will then be put forward by the university to the technē review panel. 
The final decision on the allocation of studentships rests with the 
technē review panel.
