International Communication Association for its ICA 69th annual meeting 
in Washington, D.C.

Media, Migrants and Populism: What are the Connections?

Lars Willnat, John Ben Snow Research Professor of Communications, 
Syracuse University

We hear a lot of talk about populist leaders around the world these 
days.  And many of those leaders have been pushing an anti-immigrant 
agenda.  That agenda has often been supported by media messages in a 
number of countries.
Kenneth Roth, the executive director of Human Rights Watch has observed 
in the World Report 2018 that the last year has witnessed pushback 
against populist governments. “Today, a popular reaction in a broad 
range of countries, bolstered in some cases by political leaders with 
the courage to stand up for human rights, has left the fate of many of 
these populist agendas more uncertain. Where the pushback is strong, 
populist advances have been limited. But where capitulation meets their 
message of hate and exclusion, the populists flourish.”

When focused on the issue of immigration—both legal and illegal, both 
refugees and economic migrants—what has been the role of the media—both 
in mainstream media and in online and social media—in encouraging or 
discouraging the populist message?  Our proposed panel will examine the 
connections in the United States, Europe and elsewhere in the world.
The deadline for submission is November 1.  We ask for your proposals to 
be sent to us  ((ogan /at/ indiana.edu)) by October 30.  We look forward to 
hearing from you.
