The Department of Communication and Arts, Roskilde University, invites 
applications for a salaried PhD position in Journalism Studies and News 
Audience Research from 1 February 2019 or as soon as possible 
thereafter. The position as PhD is limited to a period of 3 years of 
full-time study.



Description of the PhD project

The title of the PhD project is: “The public consumption of journalism 
and development of audiences’ news habits in a digital era”.



The PhD is part of a collaborative research project, ‘Beyond the Here 
and Now of News’, funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark, which 
will be conducted both at Aalborg University’s Copenhagen campus 
(AAU-Cph) and Roskilde University (RUC). One PhD position will be 
located at AAU-Cph, the other at RUC. Accordingly, interested applicants 
are highly encouraged to submit the same application to this post at

Both PhD candidates are expected to begin on February 1, 2019, or as 
soon as possible thereafter.

The successful candidates will be part of a collaborative research team, 
headed by Associate Professor Chris Peters (AAU-Cph) and Professor Kim 
Christian Schrøder (RUC), looking to study the social, cultural, 
technological, and material processes that influence how people consume 
news and what leads them to change their habits. One PhD project is 
expected to centre around the theme of ‘Developing News Repertoires in 
Everyday Life’, while the other will focus upon ‘News Habits across The 
Lifespan’, although applicants are encouraged to suggest alternatives 
they feel fit within the project’s aims and directions.

Responsibilities and tasks

The PhD position is an educational position and the main tasks are in 
accordance with chapter 3, Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the 
Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions

Qualifications

Applicants are expected to have a strong educational background and a 
completed master’s degree (kandidatuddannelse) within one of the 
following or related disciplines: Media Studies, Communication, 
Journalism Studies, Audience and Reception Studies, Sociology, 
Anthropology, Digital Humanities, or Computer Science.



Applicants are required to motivate their application in relation to the 
project documents mentioned above, as well as their given interests and 
expertise. This should take the form of a Project Description (max. 5 
pages double-spaced), in which you position yourself in relation to the 
overall project area and to one or both of the two PhD positions, 
reflecting on ways in which you could be a participant, theoretically 
and empirically, in bringing the project objectives to fruition.

The PhD candidates are expected to:

    Complete an article-based, PhD dissertation (as opposed to a 
monograph) within the three-year funding period. This will require 
producing international journal articles and/or book chapter 
publications, which can be written with other members of the project 
team, including the project supervisors.

    Conduct qualitative and/or quantitative empirical research (data 
collection and analysis of news use).

    Collaborate on a regular basis with the project team, participate 
in a relevant research group at the home university, and actively 
participate in advisory board meetings (comprised of international 
academic experts and leading members of Denmark’s journalism industry).

    Participate actively in PhD activities at the doctoral school.

 In addition, they are expected to demonstrate:

    Excellent command of Danish (as a prerequisite of doing fieldwork 
in Denmark).

    Good command of English (oral and written) is necessary, and 
experience writing academically in English is considered an asset.

    Excellent academic record (as shown by a list of MA-grades and 
timely completion of MA-education).

    Ability to work independently and in collaboration with other 
members of the project team.

    Interest in being part of an international research community.

You are required to be enterprising and to possess good communication 
skills and to be a visible, involved participant in the department’s 
daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary 
and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.



Assessment

In the assessment regarding employment consideration will be given to;



    Relevant Master’s degree or equivalent (according to Danish 
Qualifications Framework for Higher Education:

    Any additional academic requirements stated in the job advertisement.

In the assessment regarding enrollment consideration will also be given 
to the following criteria:



    Educational skills and any further professional qualifications

    Grades at Master’s programme or equivalent

    Quality and relevance of the Project Description mentioned above, 
including the quality and relevance of the methodological and 
theoretical choices

    The fit of the Project Description with the overall project aims, 
as described in the documents mentioned above.

Terms of employment

The employment is on full time 37 hours per week and you will refer to 
head of department Hanne Løngreen.

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the 
Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional 
Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.
