CALL FOR APPLICANTS

Postdoctoral Fellowship

*Energy Futures *(2019-2020)

Value: $55,000 CAD

In conjunction with the on-going research project on “ <https://futureenergysystems.ca/research/system-wide-enablers/energy-humanities/transition-in-energy-culture-and-society-tecs>Transition in Energy, Culture and Society,” <https://futureenergysystems.ca/research/system-wide-enablers/energy-humanities/transition-in-energy-culture-and-society-tecs> a multi-year research project with Future Energy Systems (based at the University of Alberta and affiliated with the University of Waterloo), we are seeking a postdoctoral research fellow for the 2019-2020 academic year (July 2019-June 2020). Junior scholars engaged in work across the disciplines, who will have defended their dissertations within the past three years (July 2016-June 2019), and whose research falls within the range of issues mapped out by this theme, are welcome to apply.

“Transition in Energy, Culture and Society” explores the social, cultural and political possibilities and/or limits generated by forms of energy, and opportunities and impasses for social and energy transition. Potential fellows will be engaged in research on topics and issues such as:

- the analysis of representations, narratives and discourses of energy and/or material resources within different cultural forms and media, especially as these relate to transition;

- the social, political and cultural force exerted by existing forms of energy infrastructure, including their impact on political change and social justice;

- the role played by access to resources in shaping the varied structures (material as well as immaterial) that make up modernity;

- new materialisms and/or other philosophical and theoretical discourses related to energy, resources, and infrastructure;

- the shape and character of post-petrocarbon culture and society;

- public policy with respect to energy and infrastructure, especially as this relates to social change and development.

- energy theory: new conceptual advances in the field of energy humanities

The research carried out by this PDF will generate a better understanding of the connections between energy, society, and culture, and the difficulties and opportunities that will arise as global society attempts to make transitions to new energy forms and practices.

There may be an opportunity for this PDF to teach a one-term undergraduate class, for which they would be compensated in addition to the base amount of the fellowship.
