Tue Aug 07 17:13:06 GMT 2018

* Post-doctoral research fellow on big data and spatial mobilities.

Ragnar Nurkse Department of Innovation and Governance at Tallinn University of Technology is pleased to offer a 2 year, full-time research post to work on project ‘big data and spatial mobilities’.

We welcome qualified applicants with an interest in researching the social datafication with a focus on spatial mobilities. Post will contribute to the projects’ aim of developing the measurements and critically estimating bias for studying spatial mobilities from the perspective of critical data studies.

With apologies for cross-posting. Please forward to appropriate candidates. Further details:

Position: Postdoctoral Researcher

The development of information and communication technologies and growing digitalization of modern societies has created a demand for ‘digital social sciences’ as a new scholarly discipline to study and understand the possibilities and barriers (and how to overcome these) of using new types and forms of data (from mobile phones, GPS, search engines, social media, of digital ‘footprints’ of using public and private services) for coordinating societal developments.

Given its pioneering role in developing and adopting digital solutions like e-government services as e-residency, or mobile phone data as a source for official tourism statistics, Estonia offers a unique environment for interdisciplinary research in the area of big data and spatial mobilities. Building on its unique experiences, Estonia has become the leading country in many global e-initiatives. At the same time, Estonia has also arrived at crucial non-technical barriers for further development of data driven solutions to societal issues.

Key tasks:
• The main tasks of the post-doctoral researcher is to support the research efforts of the Associate Professor of Big Data in Social Sciences of RND and to carry out independent novel research on the possibilities and limits of using big data in spatial mobilities studies; • Participation in the research activities in the domains of (1) developing measurements and estimating bias of using large-scale data for studying spatial mobilities (e.g. social network analysis methods, comparative social media analytics), and / or (2) critical data / algorithm studies in the fields of spatial mobilities, like datafication of mobile lives or data-driven mobility governance;
•    To publish research in the top-ranking journals of the field;
• To participate in the teaching activities of the research group, including supervision of graduate students; • To participate in the administrative functions (drafting applications for research grants etc) of the research group; • To participate actively in the Estonian and EU level debates on big data, digital social sciences and data-driven mobility governance.

Qualification requirements:
• PhD or equivalent (defended in non-Estonian university) not later than 5 years ago in an area related to big data in social sciences (e.g. in the field of sociology, media and communication, human geography, or related discipline); • Very good knowledge of statistical and computational analysis methods and their application, experience with analysis software (R, Stata, SAS, Matlab, SPSS etc); experiences in mobility tracking and spatial analysis methods, as well as knowledge in qualitative approach are of advantage; • The person elected to the position has to be competent in the latest developments in big data analytics and its applications in social sciences. Ideally, the person should have both excellent skills in big data analytics as well as interest in critical data studies inquiry.

Conditions:
•    Start date: 1 October 2018.
• The position is financed from the national R&D institutions development program (ASTRA), which provides annual income up to 32000 EUR (including 20% national income tax, Estonian national health, social security and pension payments). • The position is fixed-term (2 years) but can be renewed (in the case of further successful project applications).

Application requirements:
•    Cover letter;
•    Curriculum vitae and a list of publications;
•    Research proposal/plan for the next 2 years;
• When applying for the 1st time for a position in TTÜ, duplicate of the required diploma (PhD) or other document proving the necessary qualification.

Applications should be sent to erkki (karo /at/ ttu.ee) and (anu.masso /at/ ttu.ee)

For more details on the position, please contact: Dr. Erkki Karo, Director of Ragnar Nurkse Department of Innovation and Governance, (erkki.karo /at/ ttu.ee), or Dr. Anu Masso, Ass.Prof. in Big Data in Social Sciences, Ragnar Nurkse Department of Innovation and Governance, (anu.masso /at/ ttu.ee).
