The Institute of Communication, Culture, Information and Technology (ICCIT) at the University of Toronto Mississauga invite applications for a tenure-stream appointment in the area of Technology and Race, at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position start date is July 1, 2019.

Successful candidates will be interdisciplinary, techno-centric critical race scholars who incorporate intersectional/feminist/cultural analysis to research the co-constituent relationship between technology and race. Research may focus on how technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Ubiquitous Communications (and related applications) shape the social world, including aspects of personal identification, racial formation, collective action, algorithmic discrimination, or other aspects of the social relations of race and technology. Such scholars could explore how communication technologies and race intersect to inform: the engagement and politics of race and ethnicity; surveillance; social inequality; transnationality and diasporas; policy; technology development; and/or social justice.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in media, communication studies, social science, computer science, or a related field, by date of appointment or shortly thereafter, and demonstrate excellence in research and teaching. Excellence in research will be demonstrated through publications in leading journals, presentations at competitive conferences, awards, and strong endorsements by referees of top international stature. Excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, strong letters of reference and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application. The successful candidate will have a graduate appointment in one of the University of Toronto's tri-campus graduate departments.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

ICCIT focuses on teaching and research excellence in its three undergraduate programs: Communication, Culture, Information and Technology, Digital Enterprise Management and Professional Writing and Communication. ICCIT is building a research complement in critical communication, interactive and immersive digital media and culture, the theory and practice of communication; and new media design.
