18-19 June, University of Greenwich, London

Abstracts and submissions from a variety of disciplinary perspectives welcome.

Trailblazing Women On and Off Screen is an international conference hosted by the Department of Creative Professions and Digital Arts, at the University of Greenwich, in association with the MeCCSA Policy Network, Nahemi, the Women’s Film and Television History Network – UK/Ireland and Women and Film and Television UK.

This international conference seeks to bring together scholars, practitioners, industry figures and students from around the world to explore the role of women on and off screen, with a particular focus on equal access. The aim is to find solutions, champion women and further the important discussions and debates as well as build connections between the academy and industry.

Kate Kinninmont, MBE – CEO of Women in Film and Television

Professor Miranda Banks – Associate Professor, Emerson College, Boston

Professor Heather Savigny – Professor of Gender, Media and Politics, De Montford University

Professor Linda Ruth Williams – Professor in Film Studies, University of Exeter

Professor Helen Wood – Professor of Media and Communication, University of Leicester

We invite proposals for twenty-minute presentations, panels, round-table discussions, screenings and targeted hands on workshops/masterclasses around any topic concerning women blazing a trail in and around the film and television industries. These might include, but are not limited to:

Historical developments

Role of the academy in supporting female filmmakers from all backgrounds

Representations on and off screen relating to diversity in all its forms (race, ethnicity, gender, class, disability, sexuality, religion, age)

Stardom and celebrity

Industrial contexts

Female led production teams - is this the answer?

Activism

Gendered roles

Moving beyond stereotypes

The ‘powerful’ woman

Sexualisation of women

Visible and invisible trailblazers

What next after #MeToo #TimesUp

Pay transparency

A selection of papers will form a special edited collection, following the conference. A noted publisher has expressed interest in publishing an academic edited collection which will feature papers from practitioners and scholars and seek to blend theory and practice on the subject of Trailblazing Women On and Off Screen. It will be edited Lucy Brown and Dr Lee-Jane Bennion–Nixon.

Please submit abstracts of 300 words maximum together with a short author biography (100 words) to *http://bit.ly/2EcO9e9*by 5th March 2018. We will notify applicants by 23 March 2018.
