Essex is advertising a political theory post (see link below - apologies for templated ‘HR speak’). It is an open call spanning all subfields of political theory, but we are especially keen to find strong candidates in critical political theory, broadly conceived (ideally with some working relationship to ideology and discourse analysis themes and/or empirical research).

The Department of Government is seeking to appoint an academic at the Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Reader level in Political Theory with demonstrable excellence in research and teaching. An ability to connect with existing areas of strength in the Department is also an advantage.

The Role and Duties

The post holder is expected to conduct research and teaching in Political Theory at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. They will also (co-)supervise undergraduate projects, MA, and PhD dissertations, and assess students through coursework and examination as well as contribute to the successful administration and management of the Department.

In addition, at the level of Senior Lecturer, the post holder is expected to provide research support and leadership to junior colleagues in the group, take on senior administrative and management roles in the Department and be publishing high-quality research in top-ranked international peer-reviewed journals.

In addition to the above, at the level of Reader, the post holder is expected to be able to demonstrate a significant research portfolio to include a well-established track record of high quality (3* and 4* level) publications in leading refereed journals, research funding from a variety of sources and capability for dissemination to different audiences for research.

Qualifications and Skills

The successful candidate will have obtained a PhD in Political Science or an allied field by the time the appointment begins.

They should have academic expertise in the area of Political Theory; evidence of a sophisticated research agenda in Political Science; demonstrable potential of excellence in both research and teaching; and evidence of a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes. The potential to generate external funding is also essential for this post.

In addition, at the level of Senior Lecturer or Reader, they will have experience of PhD supervision; a proven track record of raising research funds and managing research projects; and proven experience in managing academic programmes. Demonstrable ability to support the teaching and learning experience of all academic colleagues in a higher education environment is also essential for this post.

Salary Guide: £39,993 - £47,722 per annum (Lecturer), £50,618 - £56,951 per annum (Senior Lecturer/Reader)
