The doctoral program in Journalism, Media and Communication is open for students with a background in journalism, media and communication science. The research at JMG mainly focuses on journalism, crisis communication, political communication, media use and media structure and also Orgnanizations and communication. Candidates who are interested in any of the stated areas of research are particularly encouraged to apply to the doctoral programme.

Job assignments The successful candidate is expected to devote their time primarily to the completion of obligatory course work and the writing of a doctoral dissertation. The candidate may however undertake a limited amount of teaching, administration or research not directly connected to their dissertation topic.

The aim of the doctoral studentship is for the doctoral student to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to be able to conduct research autonomously within journalism, media and communication and to contribute to the development of knowledge within the discipline through the production of a scholarly thesis. Another aim is for the doctoral student to develop an ability to later apply the acquired knowledge and skills within post-degree research or other professional work. The position is limited to 4 years in duration and is carried out on a full-time basis unless there are acceptable reasons to the contrary (minimum 50%). The position may include departmental duties corresponding to up to 20% of a full-time post over the course of study. If such tasks are required, the duration of the appointment will be extended accordingly.
Eligibility
To meet the basic entry requirements of doctoral programmes at the University of Gothenburg, applicants must have obtained a second-cycle degree, have completed studies of at least 240 higher education credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, have completed a corresponding programme in another country or be able to demonstrate the possession of equivalent qualifications.

Specific entry requirements:
A masters degree in journalism worth 240 higher education credits (240 ECTS credits), or a masters degree in media and communication studies worth 240 higher education credits (240 ECTS credits), or a masters degree within the humanities/social sciences worth at least 240 higher education credits (240 ECTS credits) if the applicants degree project was clearly and primarily linked to the area of journalism and media studies. An applicant who has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad can also be assessed to meet the specific entry requirements.

The applicant must be proficient in English at a level that will enable him or her to fully benefit from scientific literature and courses at the doctoral level and to actively participate in the doctoral seminars.
Assessment
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for education on a doctoral level are given in Higher Education Ordinance, SFS 1993:100. The chosen candidates are those deemed most likely to complete the programme successfully within the given time. The quality of the master's thesis and of the applicant's research proposal is most important in the evaluation.

An Admissions Committee examines individual applications for evidence of probable success in an academically demanding doctoral programme.

The Head of Department is in charge of all admission decisions at the third-cycle level. Decision cannot be appealed.

It is for the applicant to make sure the application is complete and no changes/additions are allowed after the last date of application.

The application must include:
1) a CV with certified copies of educational certificates (diploma, degree certificate) and other relevant documents

2) a copy of the candidate's Master's thesis and, if applicable, additional academic publications such as articles in peer-review journals. The texts must be submitted in Swedish or English. Any translated versions must be accompanied by the original text

3) a cover letter with a written statement of purpose explaining the nature of the interest in journalism and media studies and the reasons for pursuing the degree (maximum 2 pages)

4) a research proposal for the doctoral dissertation (maximum 5 pages)

5) two letters of recommendation or contact information of two reference persons
