[ecrea] 'Going Digital. A Roadmap for Organisational Transformation’ Reuters Institute Oxford/Google DNI report

Sun Jan 07 10:22:55 GMT 2018

*Going Digital. A Roadmap for Organisational Transformation’* based on  research as Google Digital News Senior Visiting Research Scholar at the Reuters Institute, Oxford University is available for free download at http://bit.ly/2zY0IYD.

How media organisations are changing in response to an increasingly technology-driven and fiercely competitive digital environment is the focus of the report, which seeks to tease out best practice in terms of organisational transformation. I conducted over 70 issue-focused long interviews with top level managers at companies including the /Washington Post/, the /New York Times/, Axel Springer, Schibsted, Condé Nast, the BBC, CNN, /The Guardian/, Google, /Le Monde/, Mic, Vic and Vox.

Industry response has been good. The Economist called it /‚a pivot to reality‘/ and CNN /‚an extraordinary analysis of the challenges we are all facing as well as some provocative thoughts for the path forward‘./

This report provides a snapshot into the evolution of the sector, its organisations, and the sub-segmentations within it. While, in keeping with DNI objectives, it has been written for industry, it may provide background context for your scholarly investigations. Key developments highlighted include:

 * The challenge of the platforms - in terms of diminished revenues,
audience contact and data, and business model shifts in response
 * The pervasive influence of Silicon Valley/Venture Capital management
   approaches – what /is being/ imported and what /should be/ imported
 * The on-going challenge of ‘shiny new things’ and their ability to
   hi-jack strategy
 * The gradual merging of journalism, tech and data, the emergence of a
central ‚tech-data’ nervous system, and its implications for digital
   journalism
 * How social media, data and digital storytelling together build a
‘ladder of engagement’ that underlies monetisation strategies
 * The increasing significance placed on  ‚people’ issues, particularly
   talent, learning and culture change.
