The book is a collaboration by academics, journalists working for top national and international media, and civil society actors to offer both research and candid frontline insights on the mid-2010s refugee crisis in Europe. It focuses on three main arrival and destination countries on the refugees' route in 2015-16, the pivotal moment of the massive movement -- Greece, Austria and Germany. The main assumption of the book is that the news media play a crucial role in "framing the box" within which both public opinion and policymaking are formed, and thus journalism _ a profession in crisis _ has been central to one of the defining crises for 21st-century Europe.

While offering a variety of sometimes diverging perspectives, several conclusions emerge from the book, most important among them the grave difficulty of professional journalism to maintain its truth-based discourse amidst an increasingly polarized public discourse often dominated by nakedly partisan social media feeds. As public opinion quickly soured on both refugee and migrant arrivals and integration after an initially enthusiastic welcome, the media found themselves facing a confidence crisis. In addition to the common challenges of reporting on a complex, long-duration and controversial story, professional journalists covering refugees faced one new paradox: Did their own factual prudence and humanity backfire when the public's exasperation – nefariously fanned by tabloid and political profiteers – boiled over? And what are the sociopolitical consequences for Europe's if the public does not regain trust in the ability of journalists to provide reliable, accurate, factual news?

"The European refugee crisis has become a litmus test for EU politics and European humanitarianism. Born out of a productive collaboration between academics and journalists, this book presents unmatched first-hand insights into the way the news media are shaping public opinion and migration policy." --Thomas Hanitzsch, LMU Munich, Germany.
