[ecrea] Research Day: Living Labs and Transformative research contributing to sustainable development through innovation

The European Network of Living Labs invites you to send a contribution 
to work on the UN sustainable development goals. If you have a great 
case study, piece of research or on-going project you want to share with 
the Living Lab community, then we encourage you to submit a paper to the 
conference. As a practitioner, a researcher, a member of a public 
authority, you can share your experience with the largest community of 
Living Labs, so do not hesitate to take part.

Theme of the Research Day: Living Labs and Transformative research 
contributing to sustainable development through innovation

In Living Labs, one fundamental objective is to support the development 
of a better society by means of multi-stakeholder engagement in open 
innovation and experimentation processes carried out in real world 
contexts. There are different ways in which stakeholder can be engaged 
in innovation processes today, for instance through crowdsourcing 
initiatives, citizen science projects or as part of sharing economy 
initiatives. To support these human-centered, open and experimental 
processes, it is important to have accompanying methods, tools and 
approaches that not only support participation and engagement of human 
actors, but also does that in their real-world context. In addition, it 
is important that the innovations being developed are sustainable and 
support sustainable development of our society, which requires 
 responsible innovation processes while driving and supporting 
sustainable growth. Hence, Living Lab research should not only focus on 
observing innovation and sustainable societal transformation, rather it 
should initiate and catalyst these changes with the aim to strengthen 
our understanding of transformation processes and to simultaneously 
increase societal capacity to reflect on them.

How the Living Lab community could contribute?

Living Labs are innovation intermediaries based on a 
public-private-people partnership. With a rich ecosystem of actors, 
Living Labs have the potential to contribute to the Sustainable 
Development Goals (SDG) in different domains such as health, energy, 
education. We would like to hear about initiatives in each and every 
SDG. With your help, let’s make it happen!


You can submit papers in two different categories to encourage a diverse 
participation of actors: (1) research papers and research in progress 
papers,
(2) Innovation cases/project from industry/practitioner/innovation 
agents, see more details below.

OpenLivingLab Days 2018 brings together both academics and managers from 
fields of innovation and fields applying Living Labs and Living 
Laboratories to explore the benefits Living Labs provide for a variety 
of stakeholders. The 6th edition of the Living Lab Research Day at the 
Open Living Lab Days conference is an opportunity for researchers and 
practitioners to:
– Bring together a state-of-the-art review of Living Lab concepts and 
their usage
– Strengthen Living Labs as an area of innovation
– Assess new trends, current challenges and developments of Living Labs
– Co-create new disruptive innovation models
– Establish strong connections with other emerging disciplines
– Contribute to build transformative and mission-oriented research

This Call encourages contributions related to (but not limited to) the 
following topics:

Theoretical and methodological challenges, for example:
– UN sustainability goals in relation to Living Labs (please state which 
one)
– Sustainable Living Lab processes and sustainable business models
– Responsible research and innovation processes and its relation to 
Living Labs
– Integrating social, material and technical aspects of Living Lab 
activities and results
– Transformative research approaches and results of its actions

Actors motivations, needs and expectations, for example:
– User recruitment, engagement and commitment challenges
– Building commitment with stakeholders
– Actors motivation for sustainable actions
– Actors needs in relation to sustainable innovation
– Value co-creation and/or co-destruction of value

Ethical challenges in Living Lab processes and transformative research, 
for example.
– Unwitting participation
– Payment and participation
– Voluntariness in participatory processes
– Social innovation
– Privacy and IPR in Living Lab activities

Governance and process related areas, for example:
– Multi-stakeholder engagement and openness
– Financing Living Labs
– Collaboration models with multiple stakeholders in innovation processes
– Fab Labs and maker spaces for sustainability
– Maker, modifiers and fixers as well as repair cafés

Contributing is easy

The conference committee are inviting academic and practice submission 
as well as workshop sessions and poster proposals. OpenLivingLab Days 
encourage submissions from academics, researchers, practitioners, 
private, NGO and public sector agencies, policy makers, students and all 
those interested in developing SDGs. If one of the authors is a PhD 
student, please indicate it on the first page. A poster session will be 
dedicated to PhD researches.

You can choose between one of the 2 submission types.

1) Research Papers: Full or Research-in-progress papers

Full research papers refers to complete research with clear results. 
English is the language of the conference and of all submissions.

The Research in Progress category is for work that will NOT be completed 
before the conference. Participants will give an overview of their 
research purpose and progress, not a paper presentation, as the 
category’s purpose is to allow for discussion and feedback on work in 
progress.

Length: 5,000 words for full papers or 2,000 – 5,000 words for 
research-in-progress

Instructions: Papers go through a double-blind review process that 
evaluates their significance, originality, contribution and clarity. 
Upon acceptance please make sure that at least one author registers to 
secure a slot for their presentation in the conference program.

When preparing the camera-ready version of a paper, authors should add 
their details (names, affiliation, email, etc.) on the first page of the 
paper and indicate which is the corresponding author

2) Industry / Practitioner / Innovation paper

These submissions describe Living Lab practices and experiences from 
e.g. innovation processes/projects, implementation of innovations, 
Living Lab management, as well as innovations supporting Living Lab 
practices.

Our primary emphasis is on papers that advance the understanding of, and 
show how to deal with, practical issues related to Living Lab practices 
in real-world contexts.

Length: 5,000 words

Submitted papers will go through a peer review process. The Industry 
track is distinct from the Research Track in that submissions either 
discuss real-world experiences of Living Lab projects and/or practices 
or insights from innovations.

Format for full papers for OpenLivingLab Days 2018
– Please submit your paper in .doc format (Word Document). Ensure it is 
anonymous, apart from the title page with authors.
– Follow guidelines overviewed above.
– Indicate if your submission has been previously published elsewhere. 
This is to ensure that we do not infringe upon another publisher’s 
copyright policy.
– Include a 1-paragraph abstract that provides the key messages you will 
be presenting in the paper
– Include 4-6 keywords relating to the theme or topics covered by the paper
– Provide a 2-3 paragraph conclusion that summarizes the article’s main 
points and leaves the reader with the most important messages
– The paper length should be between 2’000 and 5’000 words maximum (see 
explanation above)
– References should be made according to APA-style and included at the 
end of the paper in alphabetical order.
– All papers must be submitted in English.

Scientific Steering Committee

Submitted papers will be peer-reviewed by referees assigned by the 
Scientific Steering Committee for acceptance or rejection. The 
Scientific Steering Committee is chaired by Professor Anna Ståhlbröst, 
Director of Botnia Living Living Lab at Luleå University of Technology, 
Sweden, & Vice president of the European Network of Living Labs. 
Evaluators are chosen jointly by Chair of the Research Day Committee and 
ENoLL Director. Priority will be given to qualified ENoLL members. 
Papers submitted to OpenLivingLab Days 2018 will be evaluated on their 
appropriateness of theme for the conference, scientific quality, 
innovativeness and the final recommendation of the Scientific Steering 
Committee. Authors submitting a paper are also invited to review papers 
for the conference.

What happens if my submission is accepted?

Accepted contributions will be published in the proceedings of Open 
Living Lab Days 2018 with an ISBN number. Additionally, the ENoLL 
Scientific Steering Committee will assess the option of inviting best 
papers submitted to Open Living Lab Days 2018 for publication in a 
peer-review journal.

By submitting your paper, you are hereby authorizing ENoLL to publish 
your paper in the OpenLivingLab Days 2018 proceedings which will be part 
of the Research Day of OpenLivingLab Days in Geneva, Switzerland.

Notification of acceptance will be send on 5th June. If your paper has 
been accepted, you should send the final version until 2nd July.
