*CONTEXTS FOR FILM PRACTICE*

Acknowledging the growing interest in Practice as Research in film across the academy, this symposium will invite colleagues to address the ways in which traditional research methodologies and approaches might be broadened to allow for a more fluid use of practice as research in film studies.Papers, screenings and installations will initially focus on the distinctions between practice-led research, research-led practice and practice-based research in film and how those methods of research might additionally influence film pedagogy. The symposium will also focus on the developing debate identified by Bell as “the pressure to ‘publish or perish’ and to compete for scarce research funds” (Bell, 2006).Traditional film research and scholarship, published in book-based formats or similar has tended to investigate film by seeking out associative theory, or analysed films and their contexts from a variety of perspectives, whereas filmmakers often suggest that their artefacts ought to speak for themselves. An influx of active filmmakers entering the HE environment, in part due to industry changes, has coincided with increasing pressure for production outputs in all forms to be framed and delivered as ‘REF-able’ in the research environment. This symposium aims to investigate these pressures and turn a spotlight on those engaged in practice as research in film.It will also explore how some of these film practitioners are bridging what might be seen as a dichotomy between those who make films and those who write about films and their contexts. We also ask how practice as research in the film production context impacts on wider society in REF terms; and how films and their makers might contribute to the progression of knowledge in the context of academic research.

The symposium, hosted by the Lincoln School of Film and Media and supported by the Media Practice and Education and MeCCSA Practice Network, will take place in SLT and MHT Buildings on the waterfront, at our city centre campus in the beautiful city of Lincoln.

In the twenty first century it is incumbent upon us all to understand better how life itself is mediated in order to negotiate the promise and the threat posed by ever new forms of mediation and the new expressions of power they bring with them. The stakes are enormous and there are no guarantees. One thing that is certain in this uncertain world is that the study of media and screen culture today, in both its practical and theoretical dimensions, is essential to wider prospects for a democratic future and peace in the world. It is only on that basis that media education and knowledge will foster ethical responsibility rather than unfettered instrumentality.

Research in the Lincoln School of Film and Media correspondingly engages with a wide array of themes and topics of wider concern and interest to culture, society and the creative industries. It is home to a community of practice-based researchers and media theorists undertaking projects relevant to life in societies characterised by the open sharing of information and resources, but in which the imperatives of global consumer culture threaten to stifle originality and creativity.’

The MeCCSA Practice Network champions practice within the Media, Communications and Cultural Studies Association, ensuring that those that teach and research practice have a strong voice within the subject association and beyond. We are dedicated to maintaining and developing links with the creative industries and relevant national and international networks and associations.
