Funded AHRC/ESRC PhDs in Spatial, Environmental and Cultural Politics at 
the University of Brighton

The Centre for Spatial, Environmental and Cultural Politics (SECP)

is currently inviting applications for fully-funded doctoral 
studentships to join our PhD programme at the University of Brighton 
through the AHRC-funded TECHNE consortia (UK applicants only) and ESRC 
SCDTP (UK applicants only).  These studentships are student led 
proposals, however there are also a number of pre-approved PhD projects 
that you can also apply for

 The Centre for Spatial, Environmental and Cultural Politics (SECP) 
undertakes interdisciplinary research to address global and planetary 
challenges such as climate change, human migration, social inequalities 
and resource access/depletion. We explore the environmental, spatial and 
cultural dimensions of ecological and social challenges in specific 
places, to offer new knowledge and practice for the creation of more 
sustainable and socially just societies.

Although not restricted to, we particularly welcome proposals that 
address the following issues/themes:

Environmental and climate change – media, communication and popular 
culture; activism, justice and resistance; public engagement; feminist 
and decolonial political ecology; climate histories; smart technologies 
and everyday life; big data; anthropocene and human-animal relations; 
visual and arts engagement; gender, race and migration; media and NGO 
communication of climate migration; cultural politics of food; immersive 
media and affective engagement; eco-therapy; creative approaches.

Politics of space and place – geographies of sport and leisure; popular 
culture, heritage and cultural regeneration; feminist political activism 
and protest; geographies of sexualities and gender; social and cultural 
geography of the seaside; race and community; everyday performance of 
public urban space; embodied and practiced politics of race, gender and 
sexuality; communing; urban common land; land rights and gender; 
critiques of neoliberalism; image politics and protest, mental health 
and wellbeing.

Potential applicants are advised to identify a potential supervisor to 
work with in formulating their application, and to ensure that the ‘fit’ 
between the proposed project and the research context and environment at 
the University of Brighton is clearly articulated. Enquiries for both

supervisor.

AHRC applications:
The AHRC is for Arts and Humanities research. The deadline for 
applications for study at the University of Brighton for October 2018 
entry is Monday 8th January 2018, 12pm but it is important to make 
contact with a potential supervisor as soon as possible. For further
