Associate or Full Professor, Sociology in Social Justice and Human Rights

ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY (ASU #12146)

The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the New College of 
Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at ASU is presently rebuilding, 
including adding five new tenure-track faculty and a new School Director 
last year.  As part of bringing new energy to the study of Social 
Justice and Human Rights, the School now seeks to hire a full-time, 
tenure-eligible Associate Professor or Full Professor of Sociology.  The 
successful candidate will be expected to have an established research 
agenda with national and international reputation that complements or 
extends one or more of the School’s traditional emphases: social 
movements, im/migration, human trafficking, international development, 
and gender. There is a preference for scholars approaching these issues 
from a socio-legal perspective.

The School seeks candidates who demonstrate excellence in research, 
teaching, and a commitment to building a more inclusive faculty. This is 
an opportunity to take a leadership role in a rapidly growing, socially 
conscious, innovative liberal arts program embedded in a major R1 
research institution. ASU has a strong commitment to a racially diverse 
faculty and to admitting a student body reflective of contemporary America.

Within the School, the social sciences program transcends disciplinary 
and methodological boundaries and fosters work that engages with 
community and the world. The curriculum integrates complex understanding 
of contemporary critical issues; global, national and local awareness 
and engagement; and social justice perspectives. There is a strong and 
methodologically-diverse core that anchors all degrees. BA and BS 
degrees are offered in Sociology, Political Science, Interdisciplinary 
Social & Behavioral Science, a BA in Social Justice & Human Rights, a 
minor in Sociocultural Anthropology, and three certificates highlighting 
social sciences applications. Faculty contribute to MA degrees in Social 
Justice & Human Rights, Social Technologies, and Interdisciplinary

Required Qualifications: The successful candidate must a) have a Ph.D. 
in Sociology or closely-related interdisciplinary field that explicitly 
takes a sociological perspective; b) a research record of excellence 
warranting appointment as either Associate or Full Professor with tenure 
at ASU; c) an ongoing program of research and publication in the area of 
social justice and human rights; d) a record of excellence in teaching; 
e) a record of extramural funding for empirical research; and f) a 
record of university and professional service.

Desired Qualifications: a) demonstrated intellectual contribution to the 
research in international human rights, human rights law, international 
migration and/or gender; b) engagement with the above research areas 
from a sociological or socio-legal perspective; c) demonstrated 
competence in research methods; d) evidence supporting a pattern of 
continued grant-seeking behavior; e) evidence of ability to promote 
interdisciplinary collaborations in research, f) demonstrated commitment 
to working successfully with a diverse student population, including 
first generation students.
