[ecrea] Workshop "Foucault meets Latour"

Mon Oct 09 22:58:01 GMT 2017

Workshop "Foucault meets Latour" (Vienna, Oct. 27-28, 2017)

Foucault meets Latour
Workshop on the Orders and Modes of Modernity

In collaboration with the Center "History of Knowledge" (ZGW) in Zurich, "Le foucaldien" (https://foucaldien.net/) organizes an interdisciplinary workshop on Foucault's and Latour's conceptions of modernity. The event will take place in the Institute for Science and Art (IWK) in Vienna (located at Berggasse 17) on October 27-28, 2017.

A group of philosophers, sociologists, cultural and media scholars will position themselves between the poles of Foucault's "The Order of Things" (1966) and Latour's "Inquiry into Modes of Existence" (2012): Did the famous vision of the death of man as an object of scientific inquiry anticipate the focus on non-human agency in actor-network theory? Does the "Anthropology of the Moderns" continue where the "Archaeology of the Human Sciences" left off? Or is Latour aiming at the "prosaic world" of the Renaissance as described by Foucault?

Among the speakers are Clemens Apprich (cultural scholar, Lüneburg), Tanja Gnosa (cultural scholar, Koblenz), Matthias Flatscher (philosopher, Vienna), Vera Knolle (philosopher, Berlin), Hubert Matt (philosopher and media artist, Bregenz), Roberto Nigro (philosopher, Lüneburg), Gustav Roßler (sociologist and translator, Berlin), and Gottfried Schnödl (literature and media scholar, Lüneburg). Disputants will be Bettina Bruder (media designer, Dornbirn) and Karin Harrasser (cultural scholar, Linz). The workshop is chaired by Simon Ganahl (literature and media scholar, Vienna) and Patrick Kilian (historian of knowledge, Zurich) from "Le foucaldien" (https://foucaldien.net/).
