Department of Media Studies
The University of Tulsa
Assistant Professor of Persuasive Media

Position Summary
The University of Tulsa’s Department of Media Studies invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor conversant with rhetoric and persuasion; advertising; and strategic communication, commencing August 2018. Ph.D. is required.

The department seeks a candidate who can complement the strengths of the scholarly faculty who have specializations in digital studies, screen cultures and identities, political communication, journalism, and media and social thought. Given that the Department of Media Studies encompasses media history, criticism, and theory, with an emphasis on social, political, and cultural contexts, the successful candidate should have an interest in critical and historically informed questions concerning persuasion, broadly understood, in the modern media environment.

Responsibilities include developing and shaping a curriculum that both critically approaches and contributes to our nationally-recognized advertising program. Related interests may include (but are by no means limited to) propaganda, rhetoric, narrative, storytelling, new media, data analytics, science and technology studies, strategic health communication, and neuroscience. Ability to teach quantitative or qualitative research methods is also welcomed. We especially encourage candidates capable of articulating critical approaches to teaching advertising at TU.

The Department of Media Studies is part of the Kendall College of Arts & Sciences, one of five colleges at The University of Tulsa (TU). TU, one of the oldest private educational institutions in Oklahoma, had an enrollment in fall 2016 of 4,671 students. The U.S. News and World Report ranks TU in the top 50 private schools in the United States. Information about TU and the Kendall College of Arts & Sciences programs may be found at http://artsandsciences.utulsa.edu.

Tulsa, nestled in the rolling green hills of northeastern Oklahoma, is one of the most livable and affordable cities in the United States with a lively arts and cultural scene; a metropolitan population of over 930,000; and a cost of living index of 85% of the national average.

The University of Tulsa is an equal opportunity employer and strongly encourages nominations of, and applications from, all candidates who will contribute to the commitment of diversity of our faculty as well as excellence in teaching, scholarly activities, and service.

Application Information
Review of applications will begin August 31, 2017, and will continue until the position is filled.
