*Job description*

The post-doctoral research fellow position is associated with the project Music on Demand: Economy and Copyright in a Digitised Cultural Sector (MUSEC) <http://www.hf.uio.no/imk/forskning/prosjekter/musec/musec.-project-description.pdf> (pdf). The project is funded by the Norwegian Research Council’s KULMEDIA <http://www.forskningsradet.no/prognett-kulmedia/Home_page/1253998102173> programme.


The overall aim of the project is to provide new insight into how music is distributed and paid for in the digital era. The project entails examinations of the economic interactions among different parties in the music sector and the ways in which copyright law protects those involved. The project is organised in three work packages: (1) “Negotiations of economy and copyright”, (2) “Competition in national and global markets” and (3) “Interventions of state policy”. The research project will offer novel contributions of knowledge to academic research on cultural production, to those working in the music sector, as well as to the public policymakers responsible for it.

The successful candidate will be responsible for a work package (2) in the research project, which is titled “Competition in national and global markets”. The aim of this work package is to examine how Norwegian artists, record labels and management groups, particularly small and medium-sized ones, are competing in globalised markets. A key method will be a survey covering large sections of the music sector. Applicants must submit a project description detailing how they wish to research the topic of this work package.

The candidate is expected to become part of the research environment of the department and contribute to its development. The main purpose of postdoctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

The appointment is available for a period of 2 (two) years.

*Qualification requirements*

  * PhD or similar qualifications within an area with relevance to the
    planned postdoctoral work
  * Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
  * The candidate's research project must be closely connected to the
    main research area, and the research questions and methods employed
    in the MUSEC project, especially the specified work package
  * Personal suitability and motivation for the position

The doctoral dissertation must have been submitted for evaluation before the application deadline.

The following qualifications will count in the assessment of the applicants:

  * the scholarly quality of the project description and its
    research-related relevance
  * the applicant’s track record in research and experience with the
methods and theories used in the MUSEC project (see project description)
  * the applicant’s estimated academic and personal ability to carry out
    the project within the given time frame
  * great co-operative skills and the ability to successfully join in
    academic collaboration within and across disciplines

    experience, administrative experience and other qualifying activity)
  * project description (approximately 3-5 pages), including a schedule
    of activities. The project description must clarify how the
    applicant will approach the post-doctoral project theme
    theoretically and methodically, and render evidence that the project
    will be completed within the given time frame.
