Sun Jun 25 16:44:40 GMT 2017

The Department of Media and Journalism Studies within the School of Communication and Culture invites applications for a position as assistant professor in journalism studies and digital methods.

The assistant professorship is a full-time, three-year position. The appointment is from 1 December 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The place of employment is Helsingforsgade 14, 8200 Aarhus N.

The position
The position as assistant professor (adjunkt) in journalism studies and digital methods includes tasks and responsibilities in all of Aarhus University’s core activities in the areas of research, teaching, talent development and knowledge exchange. In order to maintain and develop the department’s excellent research environment, the person appointed is expected to be present at the department on a daily basis. Participation in the daily life of the department is a high priority, and we emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students.

Research
Given the increasing amount, diversity and interconnectedness of journalism in digital forms (both contemporary and archived), we are interested in candidates with an interest in and experience of applying digital methods to the study of journalism. Preference will be given to candidates whose work is related to one or more of the following areas:

• the development of new digital methodologies (e.g. involving big data) for researching journalism
• audience or user studies (e.g. focusing on participation)
• theory development within journalism and media studies

While the topic of the research is not decisive, the successful candidate is expected to engage with one or more of the central issues within journalism studies, e.g. media institutions, technologies and platforms, democracy, citizenship, community, professionalism, participation, gender, political economy and globalisation.

Applicants must document research results at an international level.

Teaching
The successful applicant will be expected to teach at least two of the mandatory disciplines in the degree programmes at the department (e.g. our BA and MA in media studies, our MA in journalism or our Master’s degree in journalism, media and globalisation). Candidates must specify which courses at the department they will be able to teach.

Owing to the increasingly international focus of the degree programmes, the assistant professorship may involve teaching duties in English. If the successful applicant is not fluent in Danish, he or she will be expected to acquire (within about two years) sufficient fluency in Danish to perform the necessary teaching and examination duties, and to take part in the academic life of the school (including administrative tasks).

Talent development
The assistant professor will be expected to develop his/her supervision capabilities at both BA and MA levels.

Knowledge exchange
The successful applicant will be expected to exchange knowledge with various sectors of society outside the university, and to contribute to the general public debate in areas related to the position.

The successful applicant will also have good opportunities for engaging in relevant cooperative initiatives with partners inside and outside Aarhus University.

Qualifications
Applicants will be expected to provide a portfolio with evidence of

● a PhD or its equivalent within media, communication or journalism studies
● a research profile focused on applying digital methods to the study of journalism ● the potential to develop a substantial research and publication profile in accordance with the advertised position ● the potential to develop research projects related to the advertised position
● successful teaching at university level within media or journalism studies

The application must be submitted in English. Deadline: August 10, 2017.
