12 doctoral scholarships as part of the research group “Processes of 
Sustainability Transformation”

At Leuphana University of Lüneburg, foundation under public law, twelve 
doctoral scholarships are being offered as part of the research group 
“Processes of Sustainability Transformation”, funded by the Robert Bosch 
foundation. Scholarships start October 1, 2017.

ONE SCHOLARSHIP IS FOCUSED ON A COMMUNICATION PERSPECTIVE ON DRIVERS AND 
BARRIERS IN POPULARIZING LOCAL ALTERNATIVE FOOD SYSTEMS (see below).

The invitation to apply for the scholarships is targeted at 
extraordinarily qualified young academics working in sustainability 
science or in a discipline related to the individual topic of the 
scholarship as well as a link or interest in sustainability science. The 
scholarships will first be awarded for one year and will be extended 
upon request, adding up to a maximum of three years. Periods with 
alternative financial support for a doctoral qualification prior to the 
scholarship will be taken into account. Candidates, who have already 
earned a doctoral degree, cannot be considered.

The scholarship is worth € 1,400 monthly (plus child benefit, if 
appropriate).

In addition, the scholarship requires enrolling in the doctoral 
programme at Leuphana University of Lüneburg as well as continuous and 
active participation in the programme of study. The application for the 
doctoral programme must be submitted after the applicant has been 
accepted as a scholarship holder. Admission to and enrolment in the 
doctoral programme must be finalized at the beginning of the scholarship 
term at the latest. The prospective scholarship holder will be expected 
to establish his or her place of residence in Lüneburg during his or her 
study.

The research group “Processes of Sustainability Transformation”

The focus of this research group is on processes of transformation that 
lead to more sustainable development. It aims for a better understanding 
of drivers and barriers of such transformations: What can we learn from 
disciplinary perspectives on successful transformation processes? What 
can we take out of insights into failures and less successful 
approaches? What spatial and temporal scales need to be considered for 
such dynamics?

Analysis of such processes of transformation is carried out from five 
distinctive perspectives and contextualized in two specific areas: food 
systems and textiles. The following five perspectives reflect the 
different areas of expertise of the faculty and are represented with two 
PhD scholarships and supervisors each:

Transformations in the Perspective of Individual Learning and Communication

PhD 01a: From the Niche Cuisine to the Mainstream Kitchen? A 
Communication Perspective on Drivers and Barriers in Popularizing Local 
Alternative Food Systems (Working Title)

Transformations as a Process of Politics and Governance

PhD 03a: “Textile-Transition” as Political Challenge (Working Title)

PhD 05a: A Social-Ecological System Perspective on the Disconnect 
between Food Production and Consumption (Working Title)

PhD 05b: Sustainable Chemistry within the Textile Sector (Working Title)
Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Klaus Kümmerer

An additional cross-sectional perspective focuses on transdisciplinary 
integration across the different perspectives and methods of 
transdisciplinary transformation research with two additional PhD 
scholarships:

PhD 06a: Inter- and Transdisciplinary Research: Methods for 
Communicative, Social, Cultural and Epistemic Integration (Working Title)

PhD 06b: Inter- and Tansdisciplinary Research as a Mode of Learning in 
Communities of Practice (Working Title)
Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Matthias Barth
