Fri Apr 14 11:32:50 GMT 2017

Research Associate: ‘Reframing Russia for Global Mediasphere from Cold War to “Information War”’
*
/3-year post available from 1 June 2017 - 37 hours per week for the first 2 years and 11.1 hours per week for the third year. Closing Date: 9 May, 2017/

A Research Associate in Sociology is required to support Professor Marie Gillespie (Sociology) and Dr Alistair Willis (Computer Science) who, with colleagues from Manchester University (Russian Studies), are beginning a major 3-year, AHRC-funded grant project on ‘Reframing Russia for the Global Mediasphere: From Cold War to “Information War”?’. The project will provide new, inter-disciplinary insights into the post-Cold War global media ecology through an in-depth case study of one of its most controversial actors, RT (Russia Today).

The Research Associate will support colleagues with an analysis of RT audiences and their interactions with and responses to RT’s broadcast, online and social media outputs in English (and Arabic would be desirable but not essential). You will conduct focus group interviews with RT audiences and users, and using a variety of techniques in computational, content, image and discourse analysis, will investigate user interactions online and in social networks. You will co-author articles, contribute one article of your own on a relevant topic, and work alongside a second Research Associate in gathering other research sources and producing reports for our non-academic partners.

The successful candidate will have excellent knowledge of international news media, audience research and social media analysis, and will have completed a PhD on news media, political communication and/or international relations-related issues. You will have advanced literacy skills in writing English for academic purposes but also be able to write in an appropriate register for policy-makers and diverse publics.

Please note that as a consequence of the applicable Immigration Rules relating to salary levels, The Open University will not be able to obtain a Certificate of Sponsorship for the third year of this contract. Consequently in order to be considered for this appointment, all non EU/EEA candidates must hold a UK visa valid for the duration of the contract OR must be able to show that (subject to the necessary applications) they will have entitlement to remain in the UK without the benefit of a certificate of sponsorship at the commencement of the third year of this contract.
