This is a fixed term appointment for 1 year, beginning end April, 2017

LSE's Department of Media and Communications, established in 2003, 
comprises internationally acclaimed faculty who conduct critical, 
empirical, and engaged research into the central role of media and 
communications within contemporary society. We are currently seeking a 
research officer to join us by working on two complementary initiatives: 
1) the Justice, Equity, and Technology Project, which is funded by a 
grant from the Open Society Foundations, and 2) the Our Data Bodies 
Project, which is funded by a grant from New America.

The shared goals of these projects include:

- Understand the role of data-driven technologies in relation to 
conditions of marginality;
- Explore the adequacy of policies to protect members of historically 
marginalized groups from the discriminatory impacts of data-driven 
technologies;
- Examine current tools and practices developed by members of 
historically marginalized communities to confront data-driven systems in 
their lives;
- Co-design strategies to protect against data-driven discrimination and 
related harms.

The ideal candidate will have a completed PhD, or be working towards 
completion of a PhD, or have other research experience that demonstrates 
the capability to produce independent original research. They will be 
experienced in participatory and collaborative research, discourse 
analysis, and interview and focus group methods; be comfortable working 
across technical, legal, and sociocultural domains; and be experienced 
in applying theories of justice to the study of technology. Fieldwork 
will be conducted in Europe and the UK. This person will have the 
ability to analyse complex ideas, concepts, or theories, and to apply 
appropriate research methodologies.

This person will also have excellent written and verbal communication 
skills, the ability to manage their own workload and work to tight 
timescales, and the capacity to work reflexively. A strong interest in 
science and technology studies, social justice, inequality studies, 
critical technology studies would be an advantage, as would previous 
experience working with members of historically marginalized groups on 
technology issues in a European context.
