Uppsala University invites paper proposals for a U4 Cluster Conference
Social Sciences, Economics and Law (SSEL), hosted by Uppsala University,
29-30 May 2017.
U4 is a strategic partnership between Ghent University (BE), University
of Göttingen (DE), University of Groningen (NL), and Uppsala University
(SE). It is based on well-established, existing, bilateral agreements
between the partner universities. The U4 cooperation is especially
intended to take stock of academic research activities within the
participating universities. The aim is to disseminate research,
stimulate research cooperation, and provide a venue for innovative and
multi-disciplinary research approaches and critical reflection.
The SSEL Conference 2017 aims to bring together researchers and PhD
students from the participating universities on topics specifically
addressing today’s global challenges for societies. The conference theme
of the contemporary dynamics of migration operates at many levels in
society. It involves challenges emanating from different kinds of
population movements, influencing issues of borders, governance,
legislation, labour, health and mediation of refugeedom among others.
Media and Communication Studies scholars are warmly welcomed.
U4 runs between 9 am on May 29 and 17 (at the latest) May 30.

2. Migration & Arbitrary Law-Making
3. Migration and health: Entanglements of Bodies and Cultures
4. Unaccompanied Children and Health
5. The Mediation of Refugeedom: Europe's Refugee Crisis Through
Different Lenses
6. Migration and/or family!?
7. Return migration and reintegration: discourses, lived experiences and
conceptual boundaries
8. The politics of displacement and return in Africa
9. The social and political preferences of refugees
10. Language policy as a gatekeeping mechanism: the multilingual policy
paradox of monolingual nation-states.
11. Issues of Reception, Governance, Borders, and Polarization based on
the 2015 Refugee Crisis

Call for Abstracts
All participants are invited to submit an abstracts. Abstracts may only
be submitted online through the official conference website. Abstracts
received e-mail or submitted late will not be considered. In order to
standardize the abstract layout we ask you to read the preparation
guidelines carefully! Avoid submission within 48 hours of the deadline
for best system performance.
Proposed sessions
Researchers are invited to send in proposals for papers to be included
in one of the panels of the conference. Generic panel topics of special
interest are found here.
Abstract Guidelines
Authors are kindly requested to create a username and password, which
will allow access to the on-line abstracts submission system to submit
or edit abstracts.
All abstracts must be typed in English.
The deadline for abstract submission is 28 February 2017. After this
date the on-line system will be closed for evaluations.
Once submitted, the on-line system will automatically format your
abstract. Nevertheless, you should comply with the following rules:
Choose your extended abstract Topic from the list.
TITLE: Capitalize the entire title. Spell out words, do not use
abbreviations. Maximum number of characters: 150
The number of words is limited to: 200 including references.
TABLES & FIGURES: No tables or figures can be included.
REFERENCES: References should be kept to a minimum. Use the format below
and indicate references with [1] and [2] in the text.

If you have any difficulties in submitting your abstract please contact
the secretariat (annalivj.jonsson /at/ uadm.uu.se).
Only abstracts of registered participants will be printed. At least one
of the authors must be registered to the conference.
Notification of acceptance or rejection will be sent to the
corresponding author by 14 March 2017.
Please note that only the corresponding author will receive information
concerning the abstract.
Should the Scientific Committee recommend any amendments to the
abstract, the corresponding author must edit the final abstract
accordingly by accessing the on-line system by 31 March 2017.
