Media, Journalism and Film is a new department formed from the previous
subject area of Journalism and Media within the School. The intention in
creating this new department is to expand and develop our work in this
area. We are seeking an outstanding individual, at professorial level,
to lead the department through exciting times ahead and to spearhead new
developments.
The University is ambitious and has received a number of significant
awards in recent years including: Outstanding Contribution to Leadership
Development in the 2015 Times Higher Education Awards, Times Higher
University of the Year Award in 2014, Entrepreneurial University of the
Year Award in 2013, two Queen’s Awards for Enterprise and the Guardian
Inspiring Leader Award. In 2016 the University received a Queen’s
Anniversary Prize for work in the School in contemporary music. The new
department forms part of this ambition.
The Department of Media, Journalism and Film is based in a modern
building and the School has consistently invested in new facilities
including the Panasonic HD TV Studio, a Digital Radio Studio and, most
recently, a state-of-the-art digital Newsroom. A new 7.1 Surround Sound
facility for Film Studies is to be opened shortly. Research is a
priority for the School and new research initiatives in the Department
are developing including the formation of a new research Centre for
Participatory Culture (CenPaC).
As Head of Department you will contribute to management and development
of the School of Music, Humanities and Media and help set the future
direction of Media, Journalism and Film. You will lead and develop staff
to bring out the best in them, you will lead research activity, securing
funding and building capacity through internal and external
collaborations. You will help develop the School and Department’s
research, teaching and international strategies for growth.
A PhD in a relevant area is essential. You will contribute with
imagination and innovation to the Department’s wide-ranging curriculum
across all undergraduate and postgraduate years. You must have
significant leadership experience in Higher Education and be able to
show proven excellence in research at an international level as well as
evidence of inspirational teaching and knowledge of the relevant industries.
