Several American states have recently passed resolutions declaring 
pornography to be a “public health crisis”; a slew of popular media 
sources lament the “epidemic” of pornography “addiction”; lobbyists and 
elected officials implore national governments in Canada, Australia, and 
New Zealand to investigate and address the “public health” impact of 
pornography consumption. Pornography is reemerging as a potent and 
contentious focal point. However, unlike previous iterations of the 
/porn wars/, the debate is now couched firmly within the ostensibly 
value-free language of “health”.

The definition and promotion of “health” – what it is, how to cultivate 
it, and the consequences of failing to do so – always entails some moral 
dimension. Is the current treatment of pornography simply a conscious 
reframing of traditional moral sexual imperatives in order to gain 
popular traction? Or is there something else at play? Regardless of 
motives, what are the potential consequences of framing pornography 
within the language of “public health”, and what other rhetorical moves 
have enabled this trend to explode with such force?

on the subject of /Pornography and Public Health. /Forum articles are 
short thought pieces of approximately 1500 words in length.
