[ecrea] cfp Social Sciences and the Olympic and Paralympic Games

Sat May 14 10:19:02 GMT 2016

Cogent Social Sciences now welcomes a variety of submissions to a special collection of articles exploring the link between communication, media, and broadly speaking social sciences to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Submission is now open, and will be until 19th December 2016. Accepted papers will be published as and when they are received, on a continuous basis.

The role of the Olympic Games in social development is an age-old issue,
which was at the heart of Gilbert West¹s Dissertation on the Olympic
Games (1749), the first modern history of the Ancient Olympic Games.
West was concerned with the quality and sufficiency of evidence and
analysis used in the study of society. He posed questions that are
fundamental for scientific inquiry as we know it today, and explored how
it is possible to understand attitudes and events accurately when the
material available for studying the ancient games was so often myth,
fable and tradition.

More recently, other projects such as Routledge¹s Special Olympic
Issue Collection
<http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/explore/Olympic-Special-Issues-Analysis.pdf>
have promoted knowledge in this field. The result of these initiatives
vindicated West¹s and more recently Kevin Haggerty¹s prediction that
³Mega-events such as the Olympics have become vehicles for different
forms of transformation. To date, however such events have largely
escaped mainstream academic scrutiny.²

The forthcoming 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will inevitably generate
public interest and academic discussions. This call for papers invites
contributions that examine the broader link between the Olympic Games
and social sciences such as education, law,
sociology, economics, political science, human
geography, demography and sociology.

We welcome reflections on how social theories can help understand the
Olympic phenomenon by:

    * Examining communication, media and social sciences¹ theoretical and
methodological
      contributions to the studying of the Olympics;
    * Considering how Olympic-related topics have emerged in different
      subject areas;
    * Reflecting on the coverage of Olympic themes in academic outlets.

Discipline-specific and inter-disciplinary research and review articles
that address any of the questions below, as well as other innovative
ideas and contributions are also encouraged:

* What contribution can my discipline make to the study of the Olympics?
    * Why might students of (i.e. Communication and Media) be interested in
the study
      of the Olympic Games?
    * How can my discipline transform the way we approach the Olympic
      phenomenon?
