European Expert Conference on Media Education and Child Protection

Dear Colleagues,

Digital media pose new challenges to children in their roles as users
needing protection, as media consumers and as responsible citizens of
the future. This European expert conference will be held on how they can
be supported in their range of roles.

The aim of the conference is to develop a “Net Children 2020 – Growing
up with Media” roadmap proposing specific future actions to foster media
education and the protection of children and youths at the national and
European levels. The participants are called upon to play an active part
in drafting this roadmap and to contribute their individual skills and
standpoints.

Besides the two keynote speeches, the conference consists primarily of
workshops in the form of World Cafés and Future Search. In thematically
focussed working groups, representatives from the academy, associations,
media companies, educational institutions and politics will discuss
recent research findings, experience with actions for media education
and the protection of children and youths, and current needs for action
and potential solutions. The results of the individual sessions will be
shared and in the last part reviewed by representatives of the various
stakeholder groups with respect to the planned roadmap.

Thus the format of this expert conference is results-oriented and
systematically integrates participants’ expertise. Before the
conference, participating experts will receive a proposed structure and
the most important issues that a roadmap for future actions to improve
media conditions for children as they grow up is to contain. This
proposal will be based on recent research results and existing political
recommendations.

On the basis of these discussions the “Net Children 2020 – Growing up
with Media” roadmap will be finalised and made available to the European
Commission and the member states. In this way the roadmap will become a
sound basis for the political debates and implementation initiatives
ahead at the European level.

The event will take place in the English and German languages. The
plenary sessions and the keynote speeches will be translated
simultaneously. In the workshops, the language is English.

We would be pleased to welcome you to the conference. You will find
further information on the programme and on registration at

Yours sincerely
