Presentation of the journal

GLAD! Gender, language, sexualities is an online journal dedicated to research at the crossroads of gender, sexualities, and language. Pluri-, inter- and transdisciplinary, the journal is aimed at opening, mainly in the French-speaking world, a space for scientific discussion on these issues. Since gender and sexualities are framed by power relations, their material and ideological dimensions are necessarily intertwined. In this regard, feminist and gender studies have been faced with the question of language for a long time: How does gender signify? What multiple mechanisms (social, discursive, semiotic, linguistic…) are at play in the production of its meaning? How are sexualities de/re-constructed in, through and beyond language? Over the last few years, an increasing number of studies have taken up these questions of gender and language, and thus have contributed to delineating a new space for research. Though scattered across different disciplines, these research projects share some ground principles: they understand language and discourse as polysemous and non-transparent; they take power relationships into consideration in linguistic analysis; they interpret sex in a non-essentialist perspective; they acknowledge that language does something to gender categories. Despite this teeming activity, no French-speaking journal dedicated to this crossroads exists to this day.

It thus seems necessary to fill this editorial and institutional gap, and to offer a sustainable space for discussing these issues in the form of a journal. The project is original, not only because of its topic, but also because of its editorial line; in fact, the latter functions along four principles: encouraging minority research and research from the margins, valuing inter- and transdisciplinarity, opening the journal to all sorts of Francophonies, and triggering a critical stance upon the means and modes through which contemporary knowledge on gender is produced. As an online, open access journal, GLAD! will welcome different digital formats and different modes of expression (scientific, artistic and activist), as well as translations. The journal will be published twice a year, either as a varia issue or as a thematic issue.

The deadline for the first issue is: 1st February 2016
