Ethics & Values in Design Lab, Professor Katie Shilton
The Ethics & Values in Design (EViD) Lab at the iSchool at the
University of Maryland, College Park, is seeking an early-stage
researcher for a postdoctoral position focused on ethics and values
in the design of emerging technologies. Existing and emerging
projects in which the postdoc could be involved include:
·Investigating ethical and policy implications of an emerging
internet infrastructure
·Encouraging cultures of ethics in mobile and wearable application
development
·Understanding trust and user concerns in the design and adoption of
personal biometric devices
·Rethinking research ethics for large-scale and open data
Ideal applicants have a strong background in information or
technology ethics, values in design,and/or technology studies.
Experience with empirical methods is required; experience with
either qualitative or quantitative methods of inquiry is welcome.
Candidates should have completed their dissertation by August 2015.
Ideal candidates will have a strong publication record and
demonstrated success working on teams.
The postdoc is a full-time position available for a flexible term of
up to two years. Salary and benefits are competitive.
*About us:*
EViD lab research focuses on the intersection of ethics, policy, and
technology design and use. PI Katie Shilton and three doctoral
students investigate how factors such as values and norms, rules and
practices, and material constraints interact to influence emerging
technologies.
The postdoc will also join the Center for the Advanced Study of
Communities and Information (CASCI) at the UMD iSchool. The CASCI
community includes an interdisciplinary set of 11 faculty members to
provide mentoring opportunities. CASCI also offers a bimonthly
theory reading group, speaker series, and lab and meeting space.
The UMD iSchool is a growing community of engaged, interdisciplinary
researchers. Faculty, staff, postdocs, and students work
collaboratively on a range of information problems, using diverse
methods and approaches. Further opportunities for collaboration
include UMDs Information Policy and Access Center (IPAC), the
Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory (HCIL), Computational
Linguistics and Information Processing (CLIP), and the Digital
Curation Innovation Center (DCIC).
