PhD Studentship in Media and Communication
The Department of Media and Communication is pleased to offer a
fully-funded studentship for September 2015 entry to its Doctor of
Philosophy (PhD) programme.
Supervisors: Dr Jessica Bain and Dr Kaitlynn Mendes
Start Date: September 2015
Eligibility: UK/EU and International Applicants

The Department of Media and Communication is pleased to offer a
fully-funded studentship for September 2015 entry to its Doctor of
Philosophy (PhD) programme. This studentship will pay full-time
University UK/EU tuition fees for three years and include an annual
stipend of £14,057. The successful applicant will also have access to a
Research Training Support Grant worth £750 each year to help cover costs
associated with their research work.
Research Areas and Supervision
Applications are invited in the broad area of Media Representations of
Feminine Domestic Labour. We welcome research proposals from suitably
qualified applicants interested in the recent resurgence of
traditionalist discourses of gender and labour in mainstream media. This
may reflect nostalgia for an imagined past, as well contributing to
debates about feminism and ‘choice’ during the current period of austerity.
Possible of areas of research include:
•Gender Politics
•Feminist Media Analysis
•Media Representations
•Mediation of Domestic Labour
•Mediation of Femininity
We welcome applicants with a strong background in media textual analyses
and an ability to work across different media, particularly television
and social media.
The successful applicant will be supervised by Dr Jessica Bain and Dr
Kaitlynn Mendes.
Entry Requirements
•First class or upper second class undergraduate degree or an equivalent
overseas qualification in media/communication/cultural studies or a
relevant subject*
•It is expected that applicants will also hold a Masters degree in
media/communication/cultural studies or a relevant subject* or have
equivalent professional experience
•Standard English language requirements
•Available to suitable UK/EU and International (i.e., outside the EU)
applicants - please note though that the award covers tuition fees at
the UK/EU rate only; international applicants (and those not eligible to
pay UK/EU tuition fees) must demonstrate at the time of their
application that they can fund the difference in tuition fee rates
•Available for full-time registration only
•Applicants must be able to start in September 2015
* or show evidence of achieving this by September 2015

1. Draft a research proposal that tells us what you want to research,
how you intend to do it, and why it is worth doing
2. Prepare your supporting documents - with your application you need to
include proof that you meet the academic and English language entry
requirements:
•include all relevant certificates/diplomas and transcripts
•international applicants must provide official copies of their entire
course transcripts including explanations of the mark schemes used and,
where possible, an indication of their class ranking/position in class
•supporting documents not in English must be provided with a certified
English translation
You must also provide contact details for two academic (not personal)
referees who can comment on your suitability for the research degree
programme
