The Vrije Universiteit Brussel has been a leading player in the Flemish Higher Education landscape for 40 years. Description

Communication studies - journalism and media in Europe, with a focus on contemporary developments in journalism and/or (critical analysis of) the relations between journalism, politics and democracy.

Teaching:

- Lecturing in the program of master in journalism and media in Europe. A full time position implies teaching the equivalent of 24 ECTS (each course being 6 ECTS).

- Tentative list of courses (candidates are expected to teach 4 courses. Candidates are requested to specify the courses they are interested in:

* Advanced Methods for Journalism Research
* Current Case Studies in Journalism
* Journalism Practice in Europe
* Traineeship in Communication Studies: Journalism and Media in Europe
* Advanced Theoretical Debates: Journalism, Politics and Ideology
* The Political Economy of Journalism
* Media, Public Spheres and Public Opinions in Europe
* Policy Advocacy and Media in the EU
* Supervising master theses.

Research:

- Research in (a number of) the domains related to the courses specified above and in the broader field of journalism and media in Europe, with a focus on contemporary developments in journalism and/or (critical analysis of) the relations between journalism, politics and democracy;

- Playing an active role in the department in the development of research related to journalism and media. The candidate will play an important role in one of the research groups in the department of Communication Studies and in the Brussels Platform for Journalism;

- Supervising Ph.D. theses.

Other:

The candidate is expected to share the educational project of the department, to be willing to commit to and play an active role in the department, the faculty and the university. This implies:

* Taking up representative and/or managing positions at the level of the department, the faculty, the university and/or society * Improving the external visibility of the department, the faculty and/or the university

* Planned starting date: 01/10/2015
* Length of contract: Recruitment in the rank of lecturer is a tenure track appointment which implies an initial appointment for a period of 5 years with eligibility for tenure in the rank of senior lecturer by the end of this initial period. Recruitment in other academic ranks is an initial appointment for 3 years with eligibility for tenure in the same rank by the end of this initial period.

* Holding a PhD in the social sciences;
* Good pedagogical record and willingness to invest in new educational forms; * Good research record with international refereed publications within the domain of the communication studies in the broader field of journalism and media in Europe, with a focus on contemporary developments in journalism and/or (critical analysis of) the relations between journalism, politics and democracy. * The candidate is expected to endorse the educational vision of the university (full text available on the university website).

* Every first appointment is dependent upon the successful performance of a teaching session. * Members of academic faculty with teaching duties are required to prove their command of the teaching language. E.g.: for teaching in English the candidate provides evidence of proficiency in English at C1 level by submitting a language certificate (or a waiver).
