“Downloads may be replacing CDs but they can’t ever replace the sensory
and social experiences of gigs and festivals. Further, the financial
value of live music to the music industry has arguably never been
higher,” says organiser Johnny Hopkins.
Live music boosts the UK economy by £2.2 billion a year, attracts 6.5
million fans and provides 24,000 jobs each year (UK Music/ Visit Britain
report).
After the success of last year's first Live & Kicking conference on the
live music industries, Southampton Solent University’s BA Hons Music
Promotion course is proud to present the event’s return on Wed 28
January between 12.30pm-4pm. All students and staff are welcome.
This conference brings together executives from the various parts of the
music industries with academics and students to discuss the current
state of the live music industries; how they work; how to get jobs
within live music; and festivals. The event also serves as a networking
opportunity for the students to help them get employment advice and work
experience.
The keynote speaker will be Alan McGee who discovered Oasis by chance at
a gig in Glasgow. McGee founded the seminal Creation Records using money
and contacts made from promoting gigs. He has worked extensively with My
Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream and the Libertines and currently manages
the Jesus and Mary Chain and Wilko Johnson.
The other guests are: club DJ, remixer and producer Jagz Kooner
(Prodigy, Kasabian) who is currently setting up a new club in Ibiza;
Russell Warby who planned the live strategies for Nirvana and the White
Stripes and currently represents Foo Fighters, Jack White and Vampire
Weekend; Gillian Porter who has done extensive PR for Reading & Leeds
Festival, Wireless Festival, Stone Roses, Radiohead and Manic Street
Preachers; Luke Bainbridge, a music journalist and organiser of the
award-winning Festival No.6; booking agent Liam Keightley; and Josch
Young and Alex McCuaig from live promoters Live Nation (Download,
Creamfields, O2 Guildhall).
