Cinema has been fascinated with the classical world ever since it emerged as a modern technology. There will be three sessions comprising screenings (and short discussions) of
· early films from 1898 to 1910 (inc. scenes of the temptation of St Antony, the anger of the goddess Diana; the secret love of a Roman vestal; the pleasures of the emperor Heliogabalus);
· short historical and mythic narratives from 1910 and 1911 (inc. the suffering of a Byzantine general; a poisoner at work in the court of Nero; Helen and Paris in love at Troy);
· films of antiquity in modern contexts from around 1913 (inc. excursions to ancient ruins; modern ‘Greek’ dance; the Roman emperor on the modern stage).
