Call for papers

The fourth International Symposium on Media Innovations
June 2, 2015, Crowne Plaza Hotel Brussels, Belgium

iMinds-SMIT, Vrije Universiteit Brussel will organize the fourth Symposium on Media Innovations in cooperation with the Centre for Research in Media Innovations, Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo.

The fourth International Symposium on Media Innovations will unite scholars and industry representatives to discuss innovation in the media industry. As the media sector is in flux, many challenges and opportunities will be addressed in this symposium. After previous successful editions of the Symposium in Oslo (2012), Brussels (2013), and Oslo (2014), the symposium will take place in Brussels on June 2nd. ISMI will be part of a conference week, adjoined conferences are the Private Television Conference (June 3rd) and TVX (June 3-5).

The focus of the Media Innovations symposium is on evolutions and trends in the different media sectors. We aim to explore how changing technologies, and changing modes of usage and engagement with media bring about innovation and transformation of the media industry. We will work with a combination of industrial and academic panels to discuss the current trends and challenges in (a selection of) the following sectors: print, publishing, television, film, radio, advertising, gaming, social media, music sector…

We invite submissions for papers on the following topics within these sectors:

·      Innovation in formats and content production

·      Innovation in business models

·      Innovation in distribution and delivery (trying to reach the consumer in new ways)

·      Innovation in consumption practices (new roles of users)

·      Innovation in cross- and trans-media production, delivery and consumption

·      Innovation in advertising formats and strategies


Please email your 750-word extended abstract by January 15th, 2015 (toinfo /at/ mediainnovations.be)

Abstract acceptance will be announced in February 2015. Full paper deadline is on May 1st, 2015. Best paper award will be announced during the conference. Selected papers from the symposium will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Media Innovations (https://www.journals.uio.no/index.php/TJMI/)
