Doctoral studentships in Humanities at University of Brighton

The School of Humanities at the University of Brighton is currently 
inviting applications for fully-funded doctoral studentships (stipend 
and fee waiver) to join our PhD programme in Humanities, embracing 
single-disciplinary, interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary research in 
Cultural Studies, History, Philosophy, and Politics. We particularly 
welcome proposals addressing:

(a) the nature, structure and scope of violent conflict including the 
social and cultural history of modern warfare, with reference to the 
total wars of the 20th century, legacies and memories of warfare, truth, 
justice and reconciliation in ‘post-conflict’ societies;

(b) histories of identity formations such as gender, ‘race’, nation and 
class and the role of cultural memory in these formations;

(c) colonial and postcolonial cultural and social history with reference 
to the histories and legacies of transatlantic slavery, forms of 
migration, diasporic identity, the anglophone Caribbean, the Black 
Atlantic, and 20th century US cultural history, especially histories of 
'race' and Civil Rights;

(d) political philosophy, moral philosophy, applied philosophy and 
contemporary critical theory, including neoliberalism; the politics of 
inequality and applied ethics.


Application should be made to the Doctoral Centre in the College of Arts 
and Humanities which offers AHRC (Arts and Humanities Research Council) 
funded studentships through TECHNE, a cross-university Doctoral Training 
Partnership. The Doctoral Centre is also able to award some 
University-funded studentships.

Potential applicants are advised to identify a potential supervisor to 
work with in formulating their application, and to ensure that the ‘fit’ 
between the proposed project and the research context and environment at 
the University of Brighton is clearly articulated.


The deadline for applications to study at the University of Brighton is 
4pm, 23 January 2015. The final TECHNE deadline is 7 February 2015.
