Call for Chapters

"Africa's Media Image in the 21st Century: From the Heart of Darkness to Africa Rising"
Mel Bunce, Suzanne Franks and Chris Paterson (eds).

We are seeking potential contributors for a new book of collected essays, intended to update and build upon Beverly Hawk's seminal (1992) Africa's Media Image, exploring changes and continuities in the international news coverage of Africa. Reflecting the structure of the original book, Africa's Media Image in the 21st Century will bring together academic researchers alongside news producers, editors, and commentators to explore the current state of news coverage of the continent. Its goal is to move the discussion beyond the traditional critiques of Afro-pessimism, and to explore the globalized, technology-infused forces that shape news production today.

We are looking for research-driven contributions from researchers working on any aspect of Africa's international news coverage. Chapters might address the role of new media, non-Western international news outlets / coverage, and new forms of discourse within news content (e.g. the 'Africa Rising' motif, financial, sports, lifestyle journalism etc) - but all topics and methodological approaches are welcome.

Please email a 300 word abstract outlining your chapter idea by Monday, October 6, 2014 to the three editors: [(Melanie.Bunce.1 /at/ city.ac.uk); (Suzanne.Franks.1 /at/ city.ac.uk); (C.Paterson /at/ leeds.ac.uk)] Completed chapters will be approximately 5000 words and due in their final form in January/February 2015, pending publisher's approval.

The editors anticipate including chapters from foreign correspondents, editors, cultural commentators, bloggers and media producers as well as research chapters. Potential contributors are welcome to contact the editors.
