[ecrea] Conference: Post-humanitarian Communication

Mon Sep 08 13:54:05 GMT 2014

The International Master’s programme Media and Global Communication
(MGC) is happy to welcome you
to an international conference on Post-humanitarian Communication to
be held in Helsinki on Friday, 26 September, 2014, 10am – 15pm.

This one-day conference explores what Lilie Chouliaraki calls
‘post-humanitarian’ communication. Such digital media-driven
humanitarian communication moves away from other-oriented
representations of suffering that aim to foster guilt or empathy
towards self-oriented representations, which appeal to ‘us’ and invite
us to do good in order to feel well.
Thus, the ‘post’ in post-humanitarianism signifies a challenge to the
traditional moralities by introducing solidarity that is based on our
own happiness and well-being.

Whilst the concept captures something important in the nature of
contemporary communication strategies of Non-Governmental
Organizations (NGOs), it deserves more attention. The questions that
this conference sets to explore include: In what ways is this style
driven by and dependent upon digital media? How established is it and
how does it co-exist with other, more traditional styles of
communication? What are its key features and the contexts in which it
is produced? How do media users engage with it? Can we talk about a
post-humanitarian experience or a post-humanitarian practice of
solidarity?
