Sun Jun 15 18:40:14 GMT 2014

Deadline Approaching: The Golden Age of Queer Film and Television
An Area of the Film and History Conference, Madison, WI, October 29-November 2, 2014

Deadline for Abstracts: July 1

This area seeks to investigate if we are, at present, living in the Golden Age of queer film and TV. With more dedicated LGBT-themed film festivals, television channels, and other modes of distribution and consumption, such as direct-to-streaming films and web series, LGBT+ characters, actors, directors, and producers seem to everywhere in the entertainment industry. At the same time, many Western nations have seen landmark changes in cultural acceptance and legal rights for LGBT+ people.

This area invites 20-minute papers dealing with all aspects of how the concept of a “Golden Age” relates to queer film, television, and other screen media. Possible paper topics might include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Relationship between queer film/television and politics
• Representations of LGBT+ people within queer film/television or within mainstream media
• Effects of convergence on distribution, industrial practices, and/or reception
• Non-contemporary examples of queer film and television that might challenge the present moment as a “Golden Age”
• Non-Western examples of queer film and television
• Readings of particular films, television, or web series (such as Dallas Buyers’ Club, Glee, etc.)

Proposals for complete panels (three related presentations) are also welcome, but they must include an abstract and contact information, including an e-mail address, for each presenter. For updates and registration information about the upcoming meeting, see the Film& History website (www.filmandhistory.org).

Please e-mail your 200-word proposal by July 1, 2014, to the area chair:
