Next month, Prof. dr. Chantal Mouffe takes up the VUB Teaching Chair at
the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
Mouffe is renowned for her groundbreaking work in political theory.
Together with Ernesto Laclau she contributed to the development of the
so-called Essex School of discourse analysis, a post-Marxist political
inquiry and methodology drawing on Gramsci, post-structuralism and
theories of identity, aiming to redefine Left politics in terms of
radical democracy.

Educated at the universities of Louvain, Paris, and Essex, Chantal
Mouffe is Professor of Political Theory at the University of
Westminster. She has taught at many universities in Europe, North
America and Latin America, and has held research positions at Harvard,
Cornell, the University of California, the Institute for Advanced Study
in Princeton, and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in
Paris. Prof. Mouffe is the editor of Gramsci and Marxist Theory (1979),
Dimensions of Radical Democracy (1992), Deconstruction and Pragmatism
(1996), and The Challenge of Carl Schmitt (1999); co-author (with
Ernesto Laclau) of Hegemony and Socialist Strategy: Towards a Radical
Democratic Politics (1985); and author of The Return of the Political
(1993), The Democratic Paradox (2000), and On the Political (2005).
