[ecrea] Explorations in Media Ecology new double issue

Intellect is delighted to announce the publication of the double issue 
12.3&12.4 of Explorations in Media Ecology

The 12th volume of EME probes the boundaries of Media Ecology and the 
digital media world, with this second double issue exploring how the 
ideas of seminal scholars, theorists and philosophers, from Freud to 
Foucault and Lévi-Strauss to Latour, can be applied to media ecology.



In this issue, Adriana Braga and Robert K. Logan assess Sigmund Freud's 
possible influence on the thinking of Marshall McLuhan, exploring 
parallels in their ideas, and in the fact that both men were battling 
invisible forces - unnoticed or subliminal effects in the media for 
McLuhan, and repressed memories and the unconscious for Freud. 
Similarly, Robert K. Blechman compares Marshall McLuhan's Tetrad with 
Claude Lévi-Strauss's Canonical Formula to understand how technological 
transformations operate in people's minds without their being aware, 
while Yoni Van den Eede compares the work of Bruno Latour with that of 
McLuhan, noting considerable similarities in their essential premises.



Corey Anton considers Georg Simmel's contributions to media ecology, 
suggesting he may be considered as an 'unrecognized Media Ecologist', 
and Robert C. MacDougall examines the ecological approach of 
psychologist J.J. Gibson. Phil Rose explores how the work of personality 
theorist Silvan Tomkins can contribute to the media ecology perspective, 
particularly in the study of human 'feeling', and Peter Zhang examines 
the techno-ethics in Paul Virilio's work and its significance for media 
ecology.



Lance Strate looks at how the work of Gregory Bateson and Paul 
Watzlawick provides an important contribution to media ecology through 
their application of a systems view to the study of communication. 
Similarly, Robert K. Logan reviews the systems biology work of Stuart 
Kauffman and Terrence Deacon, developing parallels with their work and 
media ecology, while Blake Seidenshaw examines how the work of Foucault 
and Heidegger can be applied to media ecology.



Finally, Hinda Mandell explores how the mediated political sex scandal 
reveals fundamental elements of our social fabric, and Flora Keshishian 
evaluates the negative effects on culture bought on by the communication 
devices made a necessity by hyper-capitalism.
