[ecrea] new PhD studentship @ Northumbria
Tue Mar 18 05:25:35 GMT 2014
PhD studentship available at Northumbria University
Project Description – Women, New Media the Abusive Turn
The recent experiences of Mary Beard and Caroline Craido-Perez point to
a growing trend in relation to the cyber-bullying of women who are
working journalists or put themselves in the public eye for other
reasons such as their specific subject expertise. The European and
International Federations of Journalists have recently launched a
campaign about ensuring the safety of journalists, not simply those
working in war zones but individuals working across diverse genres. This
project will explore the ways in which social media are being used as
vehicles for bullying, harassment and abuse of women, using a range of
exemplary case studies as a way of interrogating this new trend. This is
one facet of new media technologies. On the other side, women are using
precisely these same technologies to fight back against the perpetrators
of this new variant of violence against women (VAW), using data-mining
strategies to identify abusers, networking within and across regions and
nations to inform each other, naming and shaming where identities have
been revealed and providing information to police authorities. The work
of these activist and campaign groups will also be explored during the
project, enabling a more comprehensive understanding of the gender-new
media nexus to emerge.
