Thu Jan 23 19:25:16 GMT 2014

Modern British Drama on Screen, Editors: R. Barton Palmer and William Robert Bray, Cambridge University Press, 2013

This collection of essays offers the first comprehensive treatment of British and American films adapted from modern British plays. Most chapters are devoted to single plays and the transformations they underwent in the move from stage to screen but the emphasis is on the contextualising and understanding the films and the collection takes an open approach to the processes of adaptation.

Essays cover a range of British and US films and include

Lawrence Napper on Journey’s End
Douglas McFarland on Pygmalion
Neil Sinyard on This Happy Breed
Marcia Landy on The Browning Version
Tom Ryall on The Importance of Being Earnest
Steve Nicholson on Look Back in Anger
Christine Geraghty The Knack . . . and How to Get It
James Campbell on Entertaining Mr Sloane
Monika Pietrzak-Franger on Sleuth
Cynthia Lucia on Educating Rita
Tiffany Gilbert on Plenty
Elizabeth Rivlin on Rosencrantz& Guildenstern are Dead
