Media-based Education

Perspectives on educational science and media education

Responsible editorial team:

Prof. Dr. Rudolf Kammerl (University of Hamburg) and merzWissenschaft (JFF) editorial department

merzWissenschaft 2014 investigates issues of educational science and media education. The main issues will investigate, on the one hand, the competences and skills acquired by adolescents in their daily media practice, and their relevance for growing-up and learning in educational institutions (school, non-formal education programs in out-of school contexts, activities or educational childcare-facilities), and on the other hand, those media skills and competences acquired within formal education processes, and their relevance for adolescents’ everyday lives in a mediatized society. On the subject level the focus will be on adolescents, with their media competences and skills related to the use of media, and on educational personnel, with their willingness to include media-related aspects in their pedagogical work. On the structural level the research investigates the framework and conditions of educational and media (sub-)systems, and their relevance for enabling or impeding educational processes.

This overall research topic can be divided into different areas:

* There is need for clarification as to how the various educational institutions and contexts interact. For instance there is the question, how media education processes unfold in between formal and informal education, and what kind of interlacing can be determined between the various educational contexts. Another important issue is, which intersections of educational institutions (school, out-of school youth activities, and childcare facilities) have to be taken into consideration. * With regard to the subjects within formal education institutions, it is vital to research how to develop age and development sensitive criteria for processes of media education and competence development. This requires an investigation of media-related skills and competences of teaching staff in schools and in non-school institutions. The question is how their education and continued training has to be designed in order to reflect current requirements. * The development of the media, in particular mobile technologies as well as location-independent access to and processing of media content, change the utilization of media within the educational context („bring your own device“). This raises the question, how educational processes with, in and via technology and media are influenced by changes in the media practices of adolescents as well as by the extension of individual and institutional media repertoires. * With regard to education media and media-based learning environments available, considering also structural provisions to further media competence in educational institutions, the question must be raised, how to critically evaluate their quality and availability in order to determine their position within the framework of media-related formation processes. Examples are a critical investigation of the relevance of commercial education media and the role that companies and businesses play in schools, or the assessment of the quality of so-called competence portfolios or media-competence passes. Moreover, newly developing media in open educational resources have to be critically analyzed based on benchmarks for high-quality education. These analyses should not only consider individual learning scenarios but also a wider framework of education processes. * With regard to the conditions of social injustice and the increasing relevance of education with, in and via media in an evermore mediatized world, it is necessary to research how to design education structures in a way that allows disadvantaged groups to fully utilize their resources and realize their potential in order to successfully develop individual learning biographies. It has to be discussed, which formal education contexts can help overcome the digital divide, and if and how to establish a basic educational media service for everyone.

merzWissenschaft provides a forum to back up and push forward the scientific discussion in media pedagogy. We therefore invite you to submit qualified research papers from the various relevant disciplines to contribute to the international debate.

The kind of papers sought:

    * are based on empirical or theoretical research,
    * offer new knowledge, aspects or approaches to the subject
* explicitly refer to one of the areas or questions outlined above, or delineate a new issue within the overall context of this call for papers, and
    * have not been published elsewhere.

In the first instance, interested authors are asked to submit an abstract of no more than 6,000 characters (including spaces) to our editorial team ((merz /at/ jff.de)) by 17 February 2014. Please ensure that the papers follow the merzWissenschaft layout guidelines. These are available at www.merz-zeitschrift.de (-> über merz -> für autoren).
