The Department of Telecommunications at The Pennsylvania State
University seeks an outstanding innovator, entrepreneur or scholar for
appointment as the Palmer Chair in Telecommunications Studies, beginning
Fall 2015. This prestigious appointment is anticipated at the level of
Full Professor and includes additional funds for projects, research, and
outreach. The Palmer Chair was created in 1988 by a generous gift from
cable television pioneers James R. and Barbara R. Palmer.
The successful candidate will have a forward-looking perspective
related to any aspect of telecommunications, the emerging broadband
ecosystem, or the related information, entertainment, and communication
industries. He or she will engage students and the public through
teaching, projects, scholarship or other initiatives that enhance the
visibility of the department nationally and internationally. Potential
subject areas may include but are not limited to media entrepreneurship,
analytics, economics, technology, social media, law and policy, or
social impacts of telecommunications and new media. The successful
candidate will be expected to play an active role in graduate and
undergraduate teaching and advising, and engage in meaningful service to
the profession, university and community. A record of teaching and/or
comparable experience is preferred, as is the ability to work with
foundations and other private or public sector partners to fund new
initiatives. This is a tenured appointment and a terminal degree
preferred. Equivalent professional public or private sector experience
will be considered.
The Department of Telecommunications is an internationally
recognized center of excellence in research, teaching and service
related to the converging media, communications and information sectors.

successful, ethical careers related to the electronic media and
information industries and to conduct research and service that enhances
the potential of telecommunications to promote democracy, diversity, and
social equity. The Department works with stakeholders, policymakers,
communities and the public to address pressing questions associated with
national and global information networks. Its curriculum provides
students with an in-depth understanding of the crucial role the Internet
and telecommunications industry play in economic, politics, and culture.
The Department is home to the Institute for Information Policy, which
publishes the Journal of Information Policy, the Don Davis Professor of
Ethics, and the Pioneers Chair in Cable Telecommunications. The
successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with
faculty and research centers in the College of Communications and across
the entire University. The Department of Telecommunications is part of
Penn State’s College of Communications, the largest nationally
accredited college of its kind in the United States. The College offers
undergraduate degrees in Advertising/Public Relations, Film/Video,
Journalism, Media Studies, and Telecommunications, as well as an M.A. in
Media Studies and Ph.D. in Mass Communication.
