PhD and MS/PhD Studentships in the Department of Communication and Media, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute


The Department of Communication and Media has spaces available for a limited number exceptional students to begin their PhD or MS/PhD studies in Communication and Rhetoric in August 2015.

Applications must be submitted by January 1, 2015 to be considered for Fall 2015 admission.


The Department of Communication and Media at Rensselaer offers an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to the Ph.D. in Communication and Rhetoric centered on the study of diverse communication practices and media environments. Our faculty are nationally recognized scholars in media studies, game studies, digital rhetoric, design, visual culture, technical communication, HCI, mixed reality, ethnography, communication and composition. It is recommended that prospective PhD candidates identify potential advisors and discuss their ideas for their research with them before submitting an application.


In addition to the application form, applicants for the PhD are required to provide the following:

-GRE general test scores

-For non-native speakers, TOEFL score of 230 CBT/88 iBT/570 PBT (IELTS 6.5 or PTE 60)

-Statement of background and goals

-Academic transcripts from undergraduate and graduate institutions (if applicable)

-Evidence of teaching experience (if applicable)

-Two letters of recommendation from persons who can comment on the applicant’s scholarly preparation and potential

-Writing sample (an academic essay or a portion of a thesis)


There are both teaching assistantship and fellowship opportunities for our Ph.D. applicants. This funding is very competitive and both covers full tuition and offers a stipend, which is currently set at a rate of $18,500 for the fall and spring semesters of the academic year for teaching assistantships. Applicants who gain admission and who wish to enroll are responsible for covering the costs of the additional fees associated with enrolling at Rensselaer. These fees are listed here: http://finance.rpi.edu/update.do?catcenterkey=47. Applicants must check off "Yes” to the financial aid question on the application to be considered for funding. Funding is not guaranteed.
