PRESENTATION
Some 25 years ago, this « History of Television under De Gaulle »
pioneered research on the past of a still vividly present medium,
television. It has remained a work of reference ever since. This
re-edition had been corrected and enriched with a new foreword on the
present state of television historiography.
In the evolution of the French media, the period is crucial, in all
respects. Political with the belief in the absolute power of the medium,
sociological when the small screen quickly reached the vast majority of
the population, cultural as a new language is invented and new popular
images proliferate, professional, finally, with the birth of new
professions, within the peculiar universe of a growing public
institution, the ORTF (the French Broadcasting Corporation).
As cultural historian Jean-Pierre Rioux wrote when the book was first
published, this “reconsideration of the Gaullian decade of the Fifth
Republic gives an excellent occasion and a rich argumentation to discuss
the future of television”, and he concluded: “this indispensable book
was badly needed”. Here it is, available again!
