[ecrea] Fwd: EJC assistant editor
Fri Jun 27 17:10:21 GMT 2014
Assistant Editor – European Journal of Communication
The European Journal of Communication (EJC) is a leading international
refereed journal in the field of communications and media. It is in its
twenty-ninth year, and is one of the senior journals in its field. The
EJC is published (now six issues per year) by Sage. It has three
co-editors, one of whom (Prof. Peter Golding) is based in the UK, as are
the book reviews editors. Further information about the journal may be
found at http://ejc.sagepub.com/.
The current assistant editor is no longer able to continue with the
work, and we are now seeking a replacement. This is a part-time and
flexible position which offers an important opportunity, possibly for a
young academic or postgraduate student who wishes to get experience of
academic journals and take advantage of the networking opportunities the
position brings, or for someone who wishes to develop their editorial or
publishing skills and knowledge. Knowledge of the academic field is an
advantage, but not essential. You will need to be proficient in English,
have good administrative and IT skills (though not at a particularly
high technical level), ready internet access (whether you work from home
or not) and be resourceful and self-managing. Experience of similar
work, including currently, would be an advantage. The work is uneven in
flow, but over an average month requires up to 30 hours. The current fee
is £862 per quarter (under review). You will be provided with a
computer, and necessary expenses are all met (plus support for
attendance at one international conference or equivalent p.a.).
The main duties include:
1. Managing submissions, editing, refereeing, and revision using the
online submission system ‘Sagetrack’. This is a system created by the
publisher. Your role is to ensure both editors and authors use it
properly, and to use it in relation to authors, referees and editors to
ensure the timely processing of manuscripts. (Training on Sagetrack will
be provided, although the system is fairly intuitive).
2. Supporting the editors in their roles as needs arise.
3. Maintaining links with the publishers (Sage) to ensure the delivery
of manuscripts ready for publication, checking proofs, and dealing with
any ensuing enquiries.
4. Sub-editing accepted manuscripts to ensure they are up to appropriate
standard for publication in a leading academic journal – many authors
are using English as a second language.
5. Forwarding book reviews (once in print) to both publishers and reviewers.
For informal general queries contact the present incumbent Maryanne
Heafey, (at (ejc /at/ lboro.ac.uk)) or Prof. Peter Golding
((peter.golding /at/ northumbria.ac.uk)).
There is no application form. Applicants should submit a letter of
application setting out their experience and reasons for applying, and
with a brief c.v., to Prof. Peter Golding at the following address:
